Mayor who stayed out late is choked by angry husband, Texas police say

The husband of a mayor in Texas is accused of choking her when she got home at 2 a.m., media outlets report.

Kemah Mayor Theresa Gale arrived home early Tuesday morning and a fight began with her husband, Scott Gale, KPRC reported. Kemah is a small town of 2,000 on the Galveston Bay south of Houston.

Gale told police that her husband was upset she wasn’t home sooner, according to KPRC. That’s when he grabbed her phone and threw it, destroying the device, the Houston TV station reported.

Then he grabbed Gale, began shaking her, threw her to the floor and attempted to strangle her, KRIV reported. Police reported finding Theresa Gale with cuts to her hands, bruising on her left ear and redness on her throat, KRIV reported.

Her husband told cops that they had been in a “tussle,” according to the Houston TV station. He smelled of alcohol and had difficulty walking, according to court documents obtained by KTRK.

County jail records show Scott Gale, 65, was charged with felony assault of a family member.

Kemah Chief of Police Walter Gant said the mayor should be commended for alerting police, according to KTRK.

“She actually stood up, and even though she is a victim, she’s a hero, because she’s doing the right thing and saying no to family violence,” Gant told KTRK.
