A credit card skimmer was found at another gas station in North Texas

Another credit card skimmer has been found on a gas pump in Tarrant County.

This one was on a pump at Scooter’s Superstore, 2150 E. Highway 114, in Southlake, according to a Credit Card Skimmer Alert sent out Monday by the Texas Department of Agriculture.

The device — which is used by thieves to gain access to people’s debit and credit cards — was found on pump #3 by a TDA inspector who was responding to a complaint. A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper removed the device on April 23.

The agriculture department “looks for illegal credit card skimmers as part of our consumer protection responsibilities for over 400,000 fuel pumps statewide,” according to the alert sent out by Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller’s office.

“If a skimmer device is suspected or found, TDA will contact local law enforcement authorities for removal of the device and subsequent criminal investigation.”

Miller’s office asks for Texans to be alert at the pump and suggests:

Use pumps closest to the stores.

Look for any damage to the credit card reader or security tape on the pump cabinet and report any problems to store employees.

Use your credit card, or cash, instead of your debit card.

And keep an eye on your bank accounts after filling up your car to make sure there are no unusual charges.

Anyone who thinks they’ve been skimmed, or believes they’ve seen a skimmer, may report problems to the Agriculture Department at 1-800-TELL-TDA.

The agriculture department on Monday sent out a second alert, noting that another skimmer was found last week at the Stephens Country Corner, 303 N. 2nd St., in Hico. It was on pump #1 and Hico Police were sent to the station to handle the situation.

Monday’s alert comes as Texas lawmakers are considering removing oversight of gas pumps from the Agriculture Department and shifting it to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation by 2020.
