Recall of portable basketball goals that can fall apart. One person got hit in the head
Even a permanent basketball backboard can come down from a Chocolate Thunder storm or a Shaq Attack. But a basketball goal shouldn’t fall over by itself, which is why Russell Brands recalled about 13,462 Spalding Momentous EZ Portable Basketball Goals.
The problem, as described in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice: “Welds in the arm attaching the backboard to the pole can fail and cause the backboard to fall, posing an impact injury hazard to consumers.”
Russell Brands knows of the weld failure happening 26 times, “including three backboards separating from the pole.” The two injuries noted were a backboard hitting someone on a shoulder and another backboard hitting a person on the head.
The recalled basketball hoops have 50-inch or 54-inch backboards with either an H-frame support behind the basket or an aluminum trim, but no H-frame support. The front of the black base has “Spalding” and numbers 1010, 1011 or 12 and the back of the base has “6E.” They were sold online via Amazon or Spalding’s site and in Academy and Scheels stores from May 2021 through this April.
Russell Brands wants customers to reach out to Spalding and schedule an appointment for a technician to put a new arm on the goal. For scheduling or answering questions, contact Spalding online or by calling 800-558-5234, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Eastern time and Friday, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Eastern time.
