Will Texas Gov. Abbott endorse in the Senate GOP runoff between Cornyn, Paxton?

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday declined to endorse a candidate in the heated, nail-biter runoff between U.S. Sen. John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Cornyn and Paxton are in a May 26 Republican primary runoff for the U.S. Senate, after neither candidate secured more than 50% of votes in the March 3 primary. During the first round of voting, Cornyn won 42% of votes to Paxton’s 41.5%.

Abbott was asked about the race during a Thursday news conference about public safety policy ideas. The governor said he does not plan to support a specific candidate in the GOP contest.

“Haven’t made one yet. Not going to make one,” Abbott said. “I work with both of them very closely.”

Abbott’s remark comes in the lead up to in person early voting, which runs from May 18-22.

A spokesperson for Cornyn declined to comment. Paxton’s campaign did not immediately return an email seeking comment.
