Democrats reaching out to Texas Republicans over redistricting efforts

The Democratic National Committee is reaching out to Texas Republican voters as the state considers mid-decade congressional redistricting.

The DNC announced Monday a new national organizing program contacting “persuadable Republican Texas voters” about the push to redraw the state’s congressional districts.

The announcement comes ahead of a Texas House committee hearing in Arlington, the last of three scheduled regionally-focused meetings where members of the public can weigh in on the redistricting effort.

The Senate has also been holding committee hearings, including one on July 26 that was focused on North Texas.

The DNC is using its volunteer organizers to “contact persuadable Republican Texas voters to let them know exactly how Greg Abbott and legislative Texas Republicans are attempting to disenfranchise their vote and rig the Texas maps at the behest of Donald Trump,” a news release states.

“The DNC is all hands on deck to hold Donald Trump and Greg Abbott accountable for their scheme to use the tragic Texas floods as cover to redraw the Texas maps in a last-ditch effort to save the Republican majority,” DNC Chair Ken Martin said in a statement. “Through our 30,000 person strong distributed organizing program and our state-of-the-art data and analytics team, for the first time, the DNC will directly call persuadable Texas Republican voters and make sure they know exactly how Texas Republicans are trying to disenfranchise their vote.”

Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu commended the effort in a statement shared by the DNC.

“The DNC has been a leading supporter of our caucus since Trump and Abbott first introduced this cynical scheme,” Wu said. “Their new initiative to contact persuadable Republican voters across the state and deploy organizers directly against Republican state reps is exactly the type of partnership Texas Democrats need.”
