Two beers a week? Ted Cruz says Democrats are ‘trying to control every aspect’ of life
Sen. Ted Cruz is pushing back against the idea that Americans should limit themselves to two beers a week.
George Koob, the director for the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, suggested in a Daily Mail interview that the United States’ recommendations for alcohol consumption could be headed toward Canada’s guidelines. Canada recommends people consider reducing their alcohol use and says two or less drinks a week puts drinkers at low risk of harm, according to The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction.
“I mean, they’re not going to go up, I’m pretty sure,” Koob said of America’s guidelines, according to the Daily Mail. So, if they go in any direction, “it would be toward Canada,” he said.
The remarks have been met with criticism from some Republicans, including Cruz.
“Democrats are trying to control every aspect of your life,” the Texas Republican told Fox News. “We saw this especially during COVID and it’s continued throughout the Biden administration. All it’s done is erode trust in public health bureaucrats.”
Cruz was not available to comment Wednesday.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends that when consuming alcohol, drinks be limited to two or less in a day for men and one or less in a day for women.
