A portrait of civil rights icon Opal Lee will be unveiled Feb. 8 in the Texas Senate Chamber, where it will be permanently displayed, Sen. Royce West announced Tuesday.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick suggested the portrait during a 2021 Senate ceremony to honor Lee, the Fort Worth educator behind the federal Juneteenth holiday.

West said he worked with the Patrick’s staff, the Secretary of the Senate’s office and former State Sen. Beverly Powell to coordinate the event.

Lee was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022.
