Occupation: I am so proud to represent the district where I was born and raised as the Congressman for the 32nd District of Texas in the U.S. House.
Education: Thanks to the support of my teachers, coaches, and counselors at the YMCA, I have been able to chase my version of the American dream. After graduating from Hillcrest High School in Dallas, I earned a full-ride scholarship to play football at Baylor University graduating with a degree in history. I was ready to attend law school before the NFL came knocking. I forged a career as a linebacker before going to law school where I earned a law degree and became a civil rights attorney.
Have you run for elected office before?
I am proudly serving my third term representing the district where I was born and raised as the U.S. Representative for the 32nd District of Texas. In 2018, I was proud to win in my home district that I felt was not getting the representation we needed in Congress. I beat a 22-year incumbent by assembling a diverse coalition of support. That is the same approach I will take to this campaign as I work to beat Ted Cruz.
Please list the highlights of your civic involvement/activism.
I am not interested in playing politics, but in getting things done. It’s why I have partnered with Republicans on major bipartisan initiatives such as: bringing a new VA Hospital to Garland, strengthening the US-Mexico-Canada trade deal, passing a historic investment in rebuilding our roads and bridges and working with Senator John Cornyn to pass the first meaningful federal gun safety legislation in 30 years. I have been at the forefront of the fight to defend protections for people with pre-existing conditions under the Affordable Care Act; ensuring women can make their own reproductive health decisions; taking on big Pharma to cap the cost of insulin and allowing Medicare to negotiate lower prescription prices for seniors. Recognizing my work to bring people together, I have been a rare member of Congress to be endorsed by both the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the AFL-CIO in both of my re-election campaigns. More than 70% of the bills I cosponsored have been bipartisan.
Have you ever been arrested, charged with a crime or otherwise been part of a criminal proceeding? If yes, please explain:
No.
Have you been involved in a civil lawsuit or bankruptcy proceeding? If yes, please explain:
No.
Who are your top three campaign contributors?
I am so proud of the grassroots support of our campaign, and that we have raised $18.3 million since launching in May. This outpouring of support has come from Texans across our state, including donations from over 200,000 unique supporters and supporters from 246 of Texas’s 254 counties. The average donation to the campaign in the last quarter was just $31.62, and 94% of donations were under $100. Unlike Ted Cruz, I don’t take a dime of corporate PAC money, because I will always put Texans first, not special interests. Additionally, all donations to our campaign are in compliance with federal maximum limitations.
Why are you seeking this office?
I am a fourth generation Texan and people from across this state have shaped my life. My campaign is about freedom and restoring Texans’ freedoms. We cannot afford six more years of Ted Cruz and his divisive agenda to take away Texans’ freedoms. I know we can still work together to do big things. In Congress, I have shown that we can create jobs by investing in infrastructure and high-tech manufacturing; we can move forward on gun safety; we can protect and expand access to affordable health care. All of this is possible when we put aside partisan politics and work together. That is something Ted Cruz has no interest in. Cruz supports Texas’ extreme abortion ban that has forced women to flee our state for life-saving care, and wants to ban abortion nationwide. He vowed to repeal the Affordable Care Act and supports cuts to Medicare and Social Security that would jeopardize our seniors’ retirement security. He does not care about delivering for Texas, he only cares about himself.
What are the biggest challenges facing Texas?
In Texas we can do big things when we work together. We can ensure every Texan has access to the ladders of opportunity they need to live their version of the American dream like I did – where I had the chance to play football at Baylor and the NFL, go to law school to become a voting rights attorney and now serve in Congress. I know there are big fights ahead but we can address them by working together. This includes addressing the fact that Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the country; restoring the freedoms of Texas women to make decisions about their own bodies and to protect interstate travel for women seeking abortions; protecting Texans’ civil rights as well as their right to vote; lowering the cost of raising a family including universal pre-K, affordable child care and universal paid family leave; investing in infrastructure to create jobs; addressing the climate crisis and strengthening our grid to protect Texans and ensure that we remain a global energy leader.
If elected, what would your top 3 policy priorities be?
We must protect the freedoms of all Texans. That includes the freedom of Texas women to make their own choices about health care — not politicians like Ted Cruz. Protect the freedom to vote. And protect the freedom to get ahead if you work hard by investing in education and job training, lowering costs and growing our economy so everyone can have access to the ladders of opportunity they need to succeed.
How will you measure your success as a U.S. Senator?
I was raised by a single mother who was a public school teacher. It wasn’t always easy for us. In the U.S. Senate I will always work to be a Senator that is working just as hard as the single mom out there, who is working just as hard as Texans. When you grow up like I did, you do not have time for theoretical legislation, you need to have things passed into law that will make an impact on your life. I will judge myself on my ability to get things done for Texas.
Why should voters choose you over your opponent(s)?
Texas cannot afford six more years of Ted Cruz’s divisive politics. We deserve a Senator who doesn’t jet off to Cancun while Texans are freezing. We deserve a Senator who cares more about your job, your health care, your retirement and your kids’ education than hosting a podcast three times a week. We deserve a Senator who will restore access to an abortion, instead of one who wants to ban abortion nationwide. Ted Cruz only cares about himself. I am running for Senate to give Texans the honest, pragmatic leadership we deserve. I’m proud to have been named the most bipartisan member of the Texas Congressional Delegation, and I have shown during my time in Congress that I can deliver for Texans. Whether that is fighting to protect the Affordable Care Act, and with it protections for folks with preexisting conditions, taking on big Pharma to lower prescription drug costs for seniors on Medicare or passing billions of dollars in investments in infrastructure and high-tech manufacturing.
What should Congress do to address immigration and border security at the Texas-Mexico border?
My mom was raised in Brownsville and I often spent summers visiting my grandmother there. I know our current immigration system is broken and our border communities are bearing the brunt. I support comprehensive immigration reform that includes securing our border, speeding up and clarifying our asylum process, protecting our Dreamers and providing a pathway to citizenship for those who are working hard and obey the law, and matching our immigration system to the needs of our economy. I am a cosponsor of the bipartisan Dignity Act, which could be the foundation for the comprehensive reform we need. I am focused on real solutions, not cruel political stunts that don’t represent our values or solve the problem. In Congress, I fought to keep our border and communities secure by ensuring our law enforcement has the resources they need. We must also work closely with our partners in Mexico to take on the cartels and stop the flow of deadly fentanyl into our country.
What should Congress do to respond to and prepare for population growth in North Texas?
As a member of the Transportation Committee, I was proud to champion the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law which will bring about $35 billion to our state. This includes money to repair and strengthen our infrastructure from our roads and bridges, airports and ports, to high-speed internet access, to investing in public transit and electric vehicle charging. This bill will work to create jobs, reduce congestion and grow our economy. I know this legislation, combined with investments in high-tech manufacturing we made in the CHIPs and Science Act and clean energy jobs in the Inflation Reduction Act we can build a Texas is that is ready to seize on the opportunities of the future. Ted Cruz voted against all of this legislation. In my time in Congress, I have been focused on getting things done and ensuring that we get the federal investments that we need so Texas continues to lead the world. I will continue to do just that in the Senate.
What should be the top federal funding priorities for Congress and why?
I was born and raised by a single mom, and I know how bills can add up at the end of the month and what it is like to clip coupons. Our federal budget must reflect our values as Americans and should focus on lowering costs for Texas families. I am worried about federal spending and our growing deficit and will continue to find common-sense ways we can balance our budget like I did with the Inflation Reduction Act which is going to save Medicare an estimated $98.5 billion over the next 10 years and will help the IRS crackdown on wealthy tax cheats. I also think we need to look for innovative solutions that save taxpayers money like I did with the Garland VA hospital, where having Baylor, Scott and White donate their shuttered hospital to the VA saved taxpayers an estimated $800 million.
Should the U.S. send additional foreign aid to Israel and Ukraine?
Yes. We are still dealing with the disastrous and destabilizing invasion of Iraq that has strengthened Iranian influence in the region and led to the creation of groups like ISIS and ongoing sectarian and regional conflict. More recently, the world’s faith in America as a backstop for freedom and the protector of democracy around the world has been damaged by prominent leaders calling for the United States to withdraw from our historical alliances like NATO and to grow more closely aligned with dictators like Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, and Kim Jong Un. We must continue to support Israel as it defends itself following the violent attack from Hamas on October 7. Additionally, if we allow Putin to take Ukraine, he will not stop there, and we may find ourselves drawn into a conflict that we can win now by supporting the Ukrainian people. America’s power lies both in our own strength and also in our ability to gather the free world to join us in protecting democracy and liberty.
What’s a Texas policy issue that’s important to you, but not necessarily as high profile? Why do you think it’s important?
I didn’t know my father. So when my wife Aly and I decided to have kids I knew I would do it differently. I was the first Member of Congress to take paternity leave to be with my family after the birth of both our sons, Jordan and Cameron. I wanted to lead by example because paid family leave leads to better outcomes for everyone involved, it strengthens our workforce and is good for our economy and also leads to healthier families. Every American should have access to paid family and medical leave, so they can be there for their family, just like I had the chance to. I am proud to be working as part of the Bipartisan Paid Leave Working Group to get this done, and ensure every American can access paid family and medical leave.

Occupation: Immigration attorney, small business owner, and State Senator
Education: University of Texas San Antonio, St. Mary’s Law School - Juris Doctor
Have you run for elected office before?
San Antonio City Councilmember - (2005 - 2008) Texas State Representative - (2008 - 2021) Texas State Senator - (2021 - present day)
Please list the highlights of your civic involvement/activism.
As a Texas State Senator, I am proud to be a leading voice in the state on gun violence prevention. After the Uvalde massacre in May 2022, I fought side by side with the parents and families of the 19 children and 2 teachers to fight for common sense gun legislation, uncover the failures of the Department of Public Safety, and the state’s response to the shooting.
On the San Antonio City Council, I secured a brand new library in the southside of San Antonio, the first in over 30 years. I also spearheaded necessary after-school programs and created local incentives for electric and hybrid vehicles.
As State Representative, I prioritized mental health programs by establishing the Warrior Resiliency Center in San Antonio to focus on the treatment of PTSD for veterans and all Texans.
In 2021 I pioneered the Farmer Suicide Prevention Hotline to address the mental health needs of rural Texans. To date, the hotline has saved 60 lives and counting.
Have you ever been arrested, charged with a crime or otherwise been part of a criminal proceeding? If yes, please explain:
No
Have you been involved in a civil lawsuit or bankruptcy proceeding? If yes, please explain:
I have sued the State of Texas during redistricting to force the State to observe the Texas Constitution. In addition, I have sued the Texas Department of Public Safety to turn over public information involving the attack on Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
I have also represented multiple clients in civil matters, unrelated to my public service.
I have not declared personal or professional bankruptcy.
Who are your top three campaign contributors?
Why are you seeking this office?
I got into public service because I saw a broken system that needed fixing. That’s why I ran for City Council, the Texas House, and the Texas Senate and now I’m running for the US Senate. When Winter Storm Uri left millions of Texans in the dark, I got to work providing supplies to my constituents, Ted Cruz boarded a flight.
When the Uvalde massacre happened in my district, I got to work introducing comprehensive gun reform. Ted Cruz voted against the bipartisan SAFER Communities Act. I advocated with moms, teachers, children, hunters, and responsible gun owners.
I’m running for the US Senate because millions of Texans are being left behind by the Washington elite. Texans deserve a Senator who takes a stand and fixes the problems we face. Only bold leadership can solve tough problems like the economy, health care, women’s reproductive rights, and gun violence.
What are the biggest challenges facing Texas?
The biggest challenges facing Texas stem from the same source – politicians who have been busy lining their pockets while neglecting Texans across this state.
The State of the economy is strong but could be improved by meeting the needs of our labor shortage, providing more affordable healthcare and housing, and substantially reducing student debt.
Republicans have given in to the worst, gone to the extreme, and they refuse to scale back.
Helping Americans with their core economic stresses will put our economy on steroids and help pave the way for our future.
If elected, what would your top 3 policy priorities be?
On May 24, 2022. 19 children and two teachers were murdered by an attacker at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. Children were put in danger because of our loose gun laws. They were left unprotected by law enforcement. Common sense gun safety is critical for the safety of our children and communities.
To be clear, no meaningful law that will make our lives safer or freer will be possible unless we reform the rules of the U.S. Senate and the federal judiciary. That is why I have called for ending the filibuster and expanding and reforming the U.S. Supreme Court.
To codify Roe or pass any meaningful legislation, we must advocate for eliminating the filibuster or reforming the federal judiciary, otherwise our our fight for change is hollow and empty.
Let me be clear, I will do everything in my power to codify Roe, enact gun safety legislation, and improve our Border Security and immigration system, including expanding the courts and reforming the rules of the Senate.
How will you measure your success as a U.S. Senator?
I will measure my success as a US Senator the same way I do now – am I accessible to my constituents? Am I responsive to their needs? Have I made life better for Texans in a meaningful way? This isn’t just a position – it’s a job. I will exhaust myself on behalf of Texas until we pass gun reform until we restore reproductive rights, and until we transform our outdated, ineffective, and costly immigration system into an efficient, compassionate system that creates a pathway to citizenship. When I win this seat, I won’t just be taking on the job, I’ll be taking an oath to protect and defend Texans and our liberties from bad actors at home and abroad and I intend to honor that oath to the fullest extent of my ability.
Why should voters choose you over your opponent(s)?
I am running for the United States Senate because I witnessed complete government failure in Uvalde, Texas when an 18-year-old with an AR-15 killed 19 children and two teachers.
When people in the community that I represent were grieving their children and unfathomable tragedy - I worked hard to uncover the severe failures that occurred during and after the Uvalde school shooting and bring to light the truth. In the 20 months since, I have fought side by side with the families of Uvalde to demand change, including suing the government to see the body cam footage to see exactly how law enforcement failed to act.
I speak to Texans directly, I answer the hard questions, and I continue to tell the truth about all the ways this state is no longer working for the everyday person. I am the candidate to take on Ted Cruz.
If I am elected, I will fight every day for you in Washington DC, and come back home to help grow our progress. I will not toe DC-elite lines.
What should Congress do to address immigration and border security at the Texas-Mexico border?
I am an immigration lawyer and as a State Senator, I represent over 300 miles of the Texas Border. I support comprehensive immigration reform that meets the needs of our labor market and holds true to our Nation’s immigrant heritage. My plan is outlined on my website in detail and located here: https://rolandfortexas.com/immigration.
A pathway to normalcy for undocumented workers
Justice for DREAMers
A new work program for arriving migrants
Fix and streamline dysfunctional visa programs
End human trafficking and stop drug cartels
We need to offer a pathway to normalcy for all migrants present in our country because mass deportation is too costly and ineffective. Protecting our border includes working with all nations in Latin America to fight against human trafficking and drug cartels.
What should Congress do to respond to and prepare for population growth in North Texas?
Congress must prepare to accommodate the growing populations in North Texas by investing in robust infrastructure that goes beyond roads and bridges. We need to build out broadband, water, electricity, and transit along with increasing affordable healthcare options in our growing communities. There’s no doubt Texas continues to attract more jobs and the best talent, our state must be welcoming to those moving here, not greet them by stripping their rights at the state line. As we create an environment that’s friendly for business, it must also be attractive to families with strong public education, healthcare options, and civil rights. Our infrastructure must also be able to accommodate and sustain our new population and we must continue to secure federal investments in DART and TRE to build out public transit throughout North Texas.
What should be the top federal funding priorities for Congress and why?
The top budgetary priorities for Congress must be reinvesting our tax dollars back into the people in meaningful ways. We pay taxes thinking this money will be spent back in our community and taking care of our loved ones. Congress has to up our investments in healthcare access that is affordable, we have to invest in world class education so our kids can compete in the global market, along with student debt relief so that we’re not straddling our young people with lifelong debt before their careers have a chance to take off. Every dollar we pay in taxes should lead to more jobs, more opportunities, and a better quality of life for Texans.
Should the U.S. send additional foreign aid to Israel and Ukraine?
Yes. Democracy should be protected at all cost. Russian aggression should not be tolerated or ignored. We must continue our support of our ally Ukraine and support the cause of democracy across the globe. We must also show support to our ally Israel but not unconditionally. When we give aid to Texans, there are strings attached. If you want unemployment benefits you have to show us that you’re looking for work. If we’re attaching strings to aid given to American citizens then of course we should have conditions on aid given to foreign nations. The federal government has a responsibility to the American people to ensure that the aid we send abroad that those dollars, American tax dollars, are being used as intended and for purposes that align with our shared values, our humanitarian and national security goals.
What’s a Texas policy issue that’s important to you, but not necessarily as high profile? Why do you think it’s important?
In 2021 I pioneered the Farmer Suicide Prevention Hotline to address the mental health needs of rural Texans. To date, the hotline has saved dozens of lives and counting. Farmer suicide is a growing issue across our state and country that hasn’t been receiving the attention it deserves from policymakers. Farmers are part of our economic foundation and support families and industries across our nation. We must show our support through meaningful action to understand and address the causes of farmer suicide. Another key issue for Texas with historic droughts across Texas and reports of other states having to import fresh water to meet their demands should urge all lawmakers and industry stakeholders to take action. During this last session, I was proud to support a record billion-dollar investment into the Texas Water Fund dedicated to improving our state’s water infrastructure, increasing water conservation efforts, and identifying new water sources within our state.

I’ve volunteered for a variety of political candidates over the years, from serving former Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price during her first mayoral campaign in 2011, to knocking on doors for Senator Elizabeth Warren in the 2020 Democratic Primary for U.S. President, Gwenn Burud for Texas State Senate District 9, Trey Hunt for U.S. House TX-12, and Jessica Cisneros for U.S. House TX-28 in 2022.
My previous community involvement includes volunteering with Houston Area Women’s Center, Safe Haven of Tarrant County, Reading Partners, La Casa de las Madres, and within kids ministry at the various churches my family and I have attended over the years. I’m also a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, Texas A&M University Association of Former Students, Junior League, and a former Stephenville High School Varsity Cheerleader and Stingerette High-Kicker! I also serve as an advisor to startup founders from historically excluded backgrounds with my work at FourthWave.io and Black Ambition Project.
Have you ever been arrested, charged with a crime or otherwise been part of a criminal proceeding? If yes, please explain:
No
Have you been involved in a civil lawsuit or bankruptcy proceeding? If yes, please explain:
During the pandemic in 2020/2021, my nail salon and beauty school business closed for good, as many others in the nail and beauty industries did when we were forced to shut down for months. My family personally and my business professionally were forced into bankruptcy and are thankful to be on the other side of it. A big reason I am running is to create a positive change in the beauty industry for the many women and underserved minorities who work in those industries (and pump billions of dollars into our economy!). Beauty workers and manicurists do not have any representation at the highest levels. Workers in these industries need affordable health care, child care, language accessibility improvements, and an overhaul of the state licensing systems and beauty school requirements.
Who are your top three campaign contributors?
Ross Overline, CEO/Entrepreneur; Charles Hudson, Venture Capitalist; Tara Maldonado-Wilson, Registered Nurse
Why are you seeking this office?
Texas Democrats haven’t won a statewide race in over three decades. As a woman in this state with our reproductive rights and lives on the line, I could no longer watch the party continue to repeat their past mistakes of propping up the establishment-monied, “more viable” candidate and expect different results. How much more of Texans’ hard earned time and money are we going to continue to waste doing this?
To finally flip Texas, we need a different kind of candidate – I kept hoping to see someone that represented progressive values, someone more uplifting and inspiring, someone brown and female, like me. Eventually, I got angry and tired of waiting around while our hard won rights continued to be chipped away and decided to be the change I wanted to see. I’m a Mexican American farm girl raised in small-town Texas, that made it to the heights of Silicon Valley, and back again to serve my home state that I love.
What are the biggest challenges facing Texas?
Childcare, Housing, Healthcare (includes mental & reproductive), Immigration, Climate
If elected, what would your top 3 policy priorities be?
1. Healthcare: We need a universal health insurance program (Medicare for All!) that includes mental health, maternal health, reproductive rights, and overall care for you and me – that’s not attached to an employer.
2. Economy: We need to rethink how we beef up the economy. Innovation can’t happen when we’re all burnt out and stretched thin. We need to support working parents, young entrepreneurs, and small businesses with more childcare and funding.
3. Democracy: For Texans to have a voice in government, we must get money out of politics with comprehensive campaign finance reform, pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, and beef up public education.
How will you measure your success as a U.S. Senator?
Write, push, and vote for legislation that gets us affordable child care, health insurance not attached to employment (Medicare For All), reproductive rights, and campaign finance reform (publicly funded elections!)
Why should voters choose you over your opponent(s)?
I have a very particular set of skills and unique background story that will resonate with ordinary Texans who are desperate for a fresh perspective and an inspiring female Democratic leader. Everyone is exhausted with the fear-mongering and immature social media bickering of most politicians these days. Plus, y’all know Ted Cruz is terrified of and extremely triggered by intelligent women – he will struggle and ultimately lose if I receive the honor of your votes in the March 5th Democratic Primary. I can’t wait!
What should Congress do to address immigration and border security at the Texas-Mexico border?
Give immigrants a fair and humane path to citizenship. If you’re here and want to work, we should make it easy: get them SSNs or work numbers so they can work and start paying taxes. If they keep a clean record, let them become citizens. We need to fix the visa and asylum processing bottlenecks (a 5 year wait before an appointment?!), address the gaps that allow child migrant workers, force a culture reset by forming a new agency, and match them with jobs in housing construction to help us with our housing crisis, etc.
What should Congress do to respond to and prepare for population growth in North Texas?
Make it easier for new folks to get training to help us build more housing, and child care so people can actually go to work and contribute.
What should be the top federal funding priorities for Congress and why?
Education, Health Care (includes mental health care!), Child care
Should the U.S. send additional foreign aid to Israel and Ukraine?
No. We spent $2T (trillion!) for a 20 year war after 9/11 that created MORE terrorism, brutalization of women, and innocent deaths – have we learned nothing? Humanitarian aid, diplomacy, and advocacy of human rights is what we need from our leaders.
What’s a Texas policy issue that’s important to you, but not necessarily as high profile? Why do you think it’s important?
Beauty workers and manicurists do not have any representation at the highest levels. Workers in these industries need affordable health care, child care, language accessibility improvements, and an overhaul of the state licensing systems and beauty school requirements nationwide. As a former nail artist, nail salon owner, and beauty school educator, I’m excited to advocate for nail technicians, hair stylists, estheticians, and beauty industry workers across our state and give them a voice that has long been ignored.

• Member of the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association
I volunteered to be part of a group of American lawyers who went to former Soviet Union states, just after the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990’s. No.
Have you been involved in a civil lawsuit or bankruptcy proceeding? If yes, please explain:
I was the administrator for my Father’s estate when he passed. There was a dispute among parties, which led to a civil case. That case was settled amicably
Who are your top three campaign contributors?
Dr. Jose Rodríguez, Dr. Elvia Rodríguez, Dr. Marisela Rodríguez
Why are you seeking this office?
I have spent a lifetime of service to this country. In this time, I have had ever-increasing levels of responsibility, including being a part of the National Global Nuclear Treat Assessment Team. I understand the important issues around the world, because I have served around the world, and I am ready to serve Texas now. I have four adult daughters, who have recently lost their rights due to a Supreme Court that has gone unregulated. I have grandchildren, who I fear will grow up in a very different America than the one I defended for many decades.
What are the biggest challenges facing Texas?
The U.S./Mexico Border, the energy grid, threats from natural and man made climate change, and healthcare access for women, and the public in general
If elected, what would your top 3 policy priorities be?
Three major issues: immigration, healthcare, and the economy.
Immigration- border wall is a failed U.S. policy, and there are better ways to keep our border intact. Immigrants, including asylum seekers, migrants, and/or people who have had to move from their home countries due to climate change, insecurity in their country, or a simple desire to participate in the American dream SHOULD be treated in a more humane, ethical, and moral way.
Healthcare,- abortion and gender affirming care are all part of healthcare, and decisions should be made between their doctor and the patient. We will work towards a nation that covers all healthcare expenses for all its people.
Economy- internal and external threats to the economy. Internally, inflation has been used as a scapegoat by companies looking to get higher profits, without passing those profits down to their employees. External threats: hotspots around the world-places I have worked in.
How will you measure your success as a U.S. Senator?
Senators should be bringing additional federal funding into their State. For example, Kay Bailey Hutchison brought additional road funding. The priorinotes above serve as a metric as my success.
Why should voters choose you over your opponent(s)?
I have a lifetime of federal public service, both military and civilian & will challenge Republicans directly on their messaging about the US-Mexico Border and immigration. I will fight to restore the rights of people and their body autonomy and health care, including their right to an abortion, their right to gender-affirming care, and their right to make health care decisions with their own doctors. This also includes providing dental care to all students, and I have the way to pay for this. I will stand up to Republicans and give Texas Democrats the voice that has been stolen from them for the past 30 years.-. I can say things to Republicans without worrying about a long political career. I will accomplish these three goals by talking about these issues that have been ignored. Every currently elected Democrat in TX had the chance to be a leader on the topic of Border & immigration, and have failed to do so. By their inactions, they have proven a new voice is needed on these issues.
What should Congress do to address immigration and border security at the Texas-Mexico border?
Start by providing full citizenship and benefits to the original DACA recipients. My seven point plan since I started my campaign:
1.Surge resources for immigration processing of people seeking asylum, starting with CBP One interview personnel;
2. Improve oversight and funding of the Shelters and Service Program administered by FEMA to ensure border area communities are properly funded;
3. Expedite work authorization from six months to immediately;
4. Reduce the backlog of immigration court hearings with more judges, staff and resources;
5. Investigate asylum ruling disparities among immigration judges, which see some cities turning away the vast majority of asylum-seekers;
6. Modernize the family visa system in which family members can be forced to wait over 20 years to be reunited depending on their country of origin;
7. Update the Green Card Registry from 1972 to a more recent date in order to bring people into the workforce again as tax-paying, productive, legal members of society.
What should Congress do to respond to and prepare for population growth in North Texas?
I would fight to have healthcare available . Texas needs infrastructure development in the form of public transportation available. I would advocate for high speed trains that connect north Texas to East and Central Texas, in order to allow those people from North Texas to work in other parts of the State. I would fight to make sure that water resources and the energy grid are at peak capacity for North Texas.
What should be the top federal funding priorities for Congress and why?
The most important priority today is securing the border in the right way, which includes a fair and honorable immigration system. The next priority needs to be restoring the rights of women to access the healthcare they need. The U.S. must continue to fund infrastructure at all levels, our national education system, including any level or type of education our citizens need, like trade schools and/or universities.
Should the U.S. send additional foreign aid to Israel and Ukraine?
1. Yes to Ukraine, as the US needs to protect countries from dictators like Putin. 2. Foreign aid needs to go to Israel with strings attached, as the Government headed by Netanyahu has stated publicly that he is against a two-state system supported by the U.S. I am pro-Israel and pro-Palestine because I firmly believe a two state solution is possible. Presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama all brokered deals between many governments in that region that created hope towards a peaceful two state solution.
What’s a Texas policy issue that’s important to you, but not necessarily as high profile? Why do you think it’s important?
Veteran’s rights. On Day 1 in the U.S. Senate, I will be focused on reducing Health Care Deserts for all Texans- including for Veterans.I will be working with the Administration to identify improvements needed in many parts of Texas that will make it easier for Veterans to access healthcare in their communities. I will be watching very closely over the adequacy and use of funding and related services for unhoused Veterans. I will continue to support the efforts to reduce Veteran suicide, increase health care for female veterans, and advance economic security for veterans, their spouses, survivors, and caregivers.

What are the biggest challenges facing Texas?
Texas faces several significant challenges. Some of the major challenges include:
Water Scarcity: Parts of Texas experience water scarcity, and the state has to manage water resources efficiently to meet the growing demand. Infrastructure: Rapid population growth has put a strain on infrastructure, including roads, public transportation, and utilities. Addressing these issues is crucial for maintaining the quality of life.
Border Security and Immigration: Issues related to border security and immigration have been prominent, with Texas sharing a long border with Mexico.
Economic Diversification: Reducing dependence on oil and gas and diversifying the state’s economy to promote growth in other sectors is a challenge.
If elected, what would your top 3 policy priorities be?
Economic Development - Fostering a business-friendly environment, promoting job creation, and attracting investments to diversify the economy beyond oil and gas.
Border Security - Given its long border with Mexico, Texas has prioritized policies related to border security and immigration which need to meet the Federal government in terms of consistency and cooperation.
Education - Improving education outcomes by addressing funding disparities, enhancing teacher quality, and ensuring access to quality education for all students.
How will you measure your success as a U.S. Senator?
Legislative Achievements, Constituent Services, Collaboration and Bipartisanship, and Committee Work.
Why should voters choose you over your opponent(s)?
Dr. A. Robert Hassan articulates a clear and compelling vision for the future and communicates it effectively is likely to resonate with voters. A concise and well-defined message helps voters understand what he stands for. Voters appreciate authenticity in their leaders. A leader who is perceived as genuine, transparent, and trustworthy is more likely to garner support. Consistency in actions and words is crucial to Dr. A. Robert Hassan in building trust.
What should Congress do to address immigration and border security at the Texas-Mexico border?
Addressing immigration and border security at the Texas-Mexico border is a complex issue that requires a comprehensive and balanced approach. This approach should include immigration reform by including provisions for border security, pathways to legal status, enhanced border measures, humanitarian policy, temporary work programs, and public outreach.
What should Congress do to respond to and prepare for population growth in North Texas?
It is important to increase federal funding for infrastructure projects, create an affordable housing initiative, focus on job creation and a stable economic development policy, water management, and sustainability.
What should be the top federal funding priorities for Congress and why?
Public health preparedness education prioritization, research and development in technology and science, and rural development.
Should the U.S. send additional foreign aid to Israel and Ukraine?
Decisions regarding the provision of foreign aid are complex and depend on various factors, including geopolitical considerations, diplomatic relationships, national interests, and the specific needs of the recipient countries. Israel is considered a key strategic ally in the Middle East, sharing intelligence and cooperating on security matters. Disagreements over certain Israeli policies, such as settlement activities, may lead to calls for reevaluating the level of aid.
Ukraine: The effectiveness of aid in resolving the geopolitical issue is extremely complex and attempts are made to focus the funding on “border security,” in Ukraine. Also, further funding to Ukraine can escalate an already precarious relationship with Russia - all while attempting to stabilize the major tensions that continue to rise daily in the Gaza strip.
What’s a Texas policy issue that’s important to you, but not necessarily as high profile? Why do you think it’s important?
Ultimately, these decisions are often shaped by a combination of strategic considerations, diplomatic priorities, and public opinion. These issues should be debated so the American people’s wants and needs are met with a clear and precise manner.

Why are you seeking this office?
Texas needs a Senator who prioritizes people over partisanship. Bridging political divides is the solution to implementing reforms that yield lasting, tangible results. My commitment to addressing the needs of everyday Americans regardless of their political affiliation and advocating for all Texans is what drives me to run for this office.
What are the biggest challenges facing Texas?
Texas is one of the most difficult states to vote in and voter participation is among the lowest across the country. If voters were not being unconstitutionally restrained Texas leadership would actually reflect the will of the people. Millions of new voters--mostly people in marginalized communities such as voters of color, people with disabilities, and people who live in low-income areas.--are now voiceless and have been disenfranchised by gerrymandering and voter suppression.
This issue is interconnected with many of the other threats to Texans’ civil liberties such as a lack of access to affordable healthcare, growing inflation, policies that harm LGBTQ+ Texans, insufficient public education, discrimination towards immigrants, and economic inequality. If we ensure everyone can equally participate in the political process, we would see a major shift in these policies.
If elected, what would your top 3 policy priorities be?
My first priority is to address inflation and rising costs that has placed a significant burden on Texas families with a plan that includes measures to support small businesses, increase wages, and provide financial relief for working families across the country.
Second, I recognize that every person should have the right to make their own healthcare decisions, including women having control over their own bodies and futures.
Finally, I am committed to reducing gun violence by promoting responsible gun ownership and safety measures to protect the safety of all Texans, especially students in our schools.
How will you measure your success as a U.S. Senator?
My barometer of success as a U.S. Senator is the tangible improvements I make in the lives of Texans. As senator, I will get right to work and introduce legislation to address the most pressing issues facing our state—healthcare access, education equity, gun reform, infrastructure development, and comprehensive immigration reform. Moreover, success also includes fostering an open dialogue with the constituents I serve. As a former city councilmember and mayor, I understand the importance of keeping an open and honest line of communication with the very people I was elected to serve. Earning their trust and improving their lives is the ultimate measure of success.
Why should voters choose you over your opponent(s)?
This race is for a state-wide position and requires a Democratic candidate that can appeal to all Texans. We need a candidate that voters trust to represent their needs, whether the needs of rural or urban communities.
I have a unique background as a small-town city manager, a seasoned businessman, a former suburban mayor, a member of the Texas House of Representatives, and a dedicated senior pastor. These experiences serving the people of Texas help me understand and address the diverse challenges faced by rural, suburban, and urban Texans. My experience, faith-driven approach to reform, and passion for equal rights have made me even more dedicated to help create a stronger, more equitable Texas.
What should Congress do to address immigration and border security at the Texas-Mexico border?
Thousands of migrants face perilous journeys to the US, with many losing their lives due to restrictive immigration policies. I support expanding admissions programs for refugees and asylum seekers, especially those entering through Texas. Both state and federal authorities have curtailed immigrant rights, necessitating measures like easing the burden of proof, eliminating filing deadlines, providing pro bono legal assistance, and relaxing rules on corroborating documents.
Simultaneously, securing permanent legal status for millions of undocumented residents, including long-term residents and essential workers, requires establishing safer pathways to citizenship on a federal level. Redirecting funds from excessive spending on immigration enforcement, such as militarizing the US/Mexico border, can support pro bono legal services, aid organizations for immigrants, and increase social workers and case managers for these communities.
What should Congress do to respond to and prepare for population growth in North Texas?
North Texas is home to the fastest growing metro areas in the country. In order to support this record-breaking growth, Congressional leaders must prioritize infrastructure investments. As the city manager of two north Texas cities, I can attest that our infrastructure has suffered for years due to systemic lack of adequate investment. In a recent study, the American Society of Civil Engineers gave Texas a C-grade on its infrastructure report card. Although President Biden’s historic Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will bring record investment to our region, as the newest member of our congressional delegation, I will continue to prioritize north Texas and deliver home the resources needed to keep up with our growth.
What should be the top federal funding priorities for Congress and why?
Article 1 of the U.S. Constitution entrusts Congress with the power of the purse, a responsibility I understand well as a former member of the Texas House Committee on Appropriations. Congressional funding priorities should focus on healthcare, education, and border security. Texas, leading in uninsured residents, demands an emphasis on affordable healthcare, considering it a human right. Prioritizing education, from early childhood to higher education, is vital for maintaining a competitive workforce.
A balanced approach to border security is crucial. Congress should allocate more funds to DHS, FEMA, and CBP for efficient border processing, alongside block grants for cities and counties accepting migrants. Strategic investments in technology and infrastructure are necessary for improved border surveillance. Modernizing border infrastructure is essential to combat cartels and criminals while aligning effective enforcement with respect for human rights and adherence to the rule of law.
Should the U.S. send additional foreign aid to Israel and Ukraine?
Yes. However, we must establish conditions with our allies in order to continue funding such as cease fire and acceptance of our foreign policy commitments to establish a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.
What’s a Texas policy issue that’s important to you, but not necessarily as high profile? Why do you think it’s important?
In 2019, during my first legislative session, I served on the Texas House Committee on Corrections, engaging in meaningful public service. Each year, I’ve authored legislation concerning air conditioning in state prisons. While local jails maintain a climate of 65-85°F, over a third of Texas prisons lack air conditioning, reaching dangerous temperatures of up to 149°F. This jeopardizes the well-being of both inmates and the 20,000 correctional officers ensuring public safety. Drawing from my experience as a city manager, where we prioritized animal shelters’ air conditioning, I advocate for extending the same compassion to our prisons, emphasizing the well-being and dignity of every Texan, regardless of their circumstances.

My career started as the youngest precinct captain in the country for Barack Obama’s Presidential Campaign in 2008. That experience led to a life of public service where I’ve served as a Northwest Houston organizer on Wendy Davis’s campaign for Governor in 2014, civil servant in the White House Office of Management and Budget, local government employee, staffer on President Biden’s campaign, and most recently as a nonprofit executive in Houston providing home repairs for seniors, veterans, and low-income families at no cost to them. Have you ever been arrested, charged with a crime or otherwise been part of a criminal proceeding? If yes, please explain:
No.
Have you been involved in a civil lawsuit or bankruptcy proceeding? If yes, please explain:
No.
Who are your top three campaign contributors?
Our campaign is driving by grassroots donations in urban, suburban, and rural Texas.
Why are you seeking this office?
My whole career has been in public service. I’ve worked in government at the local and federal level as well as having been a nonprofit executive and I’ve seen how good leadership can make the lives of everyday folks better. Our state can’t afford to continue looking to the same politicians that have been in office for multiple terms but are not fighting through legislation to improve the lives of Texans. I share the frustration that many Texans have with everyday politicians who give great talking points on campaigns and our state needs someone who is focused on making tangible positive differences for people and not just giving talking points and viewing political offices as stepping stones. I have a clear vision of what I want to accomplish during my first term in office and my primary focus would be to raise the quality of life for everyday Texans, through wage increases, access to affordable housing, and working to guarantee quality health insurance regardless of where you live.
What are the biggest challenges facing Texas?
Everyday folks in Texas are struggling to survive and aren’t thriving, our immigration system is broken and needs to get fixed, our public schools are getting destroyed by special interest donors and health insurance/care are going through the roof. These are four issues that we have been talking about the most on the ground.
If elected, what would your top 3 policy priorities be?
Economy, Immigration, and Healthcare.
How will you measure your success as a U.S. Senator?
My measurement of success in the U.S. Senate will be based off of the legislation I introduced and if I’ve been able to help make the lives of Texans better in a practical, tangible way.
Why should voters choose you over your opponent(s)?
I am the only candidate in the race that has spent his whole career as a public servant. My life has been dedicated to serving people whether that’s as an organizer in Acres Homes, civil servant in the White House Office of Management and Budget, or as a nonprofit executive in Houston providing home repairs for seniors, veterans, and low-income families in Texas. Our state is broken and everyday politicians have failed us. We need a U.S. Senator who will not only understand the needs that everyday Texans are facing but has a record of delivering for people. No elected official in this primary has introduced a bill to increase minimum wage, find a comprehensive solution on immigration, bring more dollars to our public schools, invest into child care. As a U.S. Senator, I will be introducing legislation on key issues facing Texans to bring our state to a better place and create A New Way Forward.
What should Congress do to address immigration and border security at the Texas-Mexico border?
We Must Value Migrants:
1. Place undocumented immigrants living and working in the United States without a criminal record on a path to citizenship, including those brought to the United States as children.
2. Texas is currently facing a labor shortage. If elected, I will work to pass a state-based guest-worker program in Congress so that those who come across can take positions in key Texas industries.
3. Assign legal status to those who have been processed but still need to complete their cases. This encourages migrants to continue through the process while also helping our economy.
We Must Secure Our Border:
1. Add border patrol agents and enhance our tracking technology, cameras, and underground sensors.
2. Increase the number of immigration judges and officers to efficiently process the 2.1 million backlog of cases.
3. Establishing regional processing centers in Central and South American countries.
What should Congress do to respond to and prepare for population growth in North Texas?
Congress should be sending dollars down to ensure that infrastructure and other areas have the resources needed to deal with population growth.
What should be the top federal funding priorities for Congress and why?
As one who wants to represent Texas in the U.S. Senate, I believe that the top federal funding priorities should be: Healthcare, Lower Costs for Individuals, Immigration, Education, and Improving Life for our Seniors.
Should the U.S. send additional foreign aid to Israel and Ukraine?
Yes, I believe there should be foreign aid sent to Israel and Ukraine. I do believe that these dollars should be on a conditional basis to ensure that the aid is being spent in a way that is consistent with our country’s values.
What’s a Texas policy issue that’s important to you, but not necessarily as high profile? Why do you think it’s important?
Child Care. The average cost of Childcare in Texas is near $10,000 and it takes up about 15% of the average household income in the state. Our campaign has been the only campaign to talk about its importance and provide a solution. If elected, I will work to create a network of Child Care and Early Learning Centers across Texas and have a cap on the amount it costs for a child to be in child care in order to ensure families can keep as much money in their pockets as possible for other important priorities.

What should Congress do to respond to and prepare for population growth in North Texas?

Have you ever been arrested, charged with a crime or otherwise been part of a criminal proceeding? If yes, please explain:
As college students are wont to do, I went out one night, had too much to drink, and made the fateful decision to get behind the wheel. At age 19, I received a DWI, which changed my life inestimably. It was more than a mere fork in the road: it brought a moment of pure enlightenment to the courtroom. My mom came with me that day, not a lawyer. She told me to take responsibility and to own up to what I had done.
When I went before the judge, I told him I was guilty, and he did not grant me any mercy. A naval airman from the local base came before the judge after I did — in roughly the same circumstances as I was in — except he had a lawyer. In stark contrast to my case, his case was dismissed by the Judge.
My ignorance of the system was detrimental to my life and has been to so many others just like me. That moment of clarity changed my life, and gave me a new purpose.
Have you been involved in a civil lawsuit or bankruptcy proceeding? If yes, please explain:
Led by a brazen out-of-state effort, MAGA-aligned political radicals intended to end my term early, weaponizing our already overworked Nueces courts to remove me from office. It was going to be a test case; we know so, because those political radicals said so on TV.
The civil removal trial was set for this past December, but it never happened because I refused to play the rigged Republican game. They wanted to use me as a sacrificial lamb to send a foreboding message to other duly elected DAs in Texas who exercise their discretion, intending to chill their constitutional and statutory authority to dispense their job duties as they see fit. I will not be used that way, nor will I run from a fight.
These hyper-partisan efforts ignited an insuppressible fire in my bones — the very energy that pushed me through law school and helped me stand for folks who needed a second chance, both as a criminal defense attorney and as the twice, duly-elected District Attorney.
Who are your top three campaign contributors?
Mark Gonzalez (self); Ronnie Illard; Carols Elizondo
Why are you seeking this office?
For the same reason I ran for District Attorney in Nueces County: Texans need a leader as tough as them.
I was able to make the criminal legal system in Nueces County more just during my time as District Attorney. There is nothing keeping a new DA from changing those policies that diverted people away from jail. Lasting change was not the job of the DA, it was justice.
Sustainable change can be made at the federal level in DC. The reform movement can get a lot more done by proposing laws and fixing some fundamental issues, and I gravitate toward the challenge this race provides.
Ted Cruz has proven he is not interested in being our Senator. My goal is to show Texans I am up for the job.
What are the biggest challenges facing Texas?
Extreme Republicans and their agenda are the biggest challenge facing Texas. I’ll do my part by sending Ted Cruz into cable news punditry full time.
If elected, what would your top 3 policy priorities be?
Choice and stopping a federal ban on abortion.
Immigration reform.
Criminal justice reform.
How will you measure your success as a U.S. Senator?
Texans will let me know if I am doing a good job.
Why should voters choose you over your opponent(s)?
Tattoos. Motorcycle riding. Reformer DA. Vaquero. Father of five and attorney. I know what it’s like to meet a payroll, get the kids to a dance recital on time, and castrate a steer at the ranch.
Despite what the pundits forecast, red Nueces County elected and re-elected me as their District Attorney because they understood my values. This happened while Donald Trump was on the ballot, and despite those headwinds, our campaign won with crossover voters.
This appeal is key if Democrats are going to win statewide.
What should Congress do to address immigration and border security at the Texas-Mexico border?
The Texas border with Mexico has been militarized in action and word by Gov. Greg Abbott and Texas Republicans, making it the number one issue for general election voters in the November 2024.
Immigration reform is urgent and necessary. This must include a pathway to citizenship for DREAMers and their families. More can be done to protect farmworkers and hold individuals accountable for taking advantage of immigrant workers. If a farmworker is willing to help feed Americans, they should also have a pathway to citizenship.
Walls will never fix our broken immigration system.
What should Congress do to respond to and prepare for population growth in North Texas?
Local, state and federal leaders should be doing what they can to get infrastructure dollars into fast-growing parts of Texas.
What should be the top federal funding priorities for Congress and why?
Congress should prioritize funding items that promote our safety and welfare, but also protect our values.
Should the U.S. send additional foreign aid to Israel and Ukraine?
Yes.
What’s a Texas policy issue that’s important to you, but not necessarily as high profile? Why do you think it’s important?
Cannabis needs to be decriminalized. The consequences of an arrest over weed will harm someone’s ability to get a job, rent an apartment, or get student loans. Many states have already legalized it, and while I was DA in Nueces County, I had the first program in the state directed at deprioritizing the arrest for low level amounts of marijuana.
