Dixie Chick takes aim at Ted Cruz

Natalie Maines is at it again.

Remember back in 2003 when the Dixie Chicks singer told a London audience that she was “ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas”? Now, she’s letting it be known that she’s no fan of Texas senator and presidential hopeful Ted Cruz, either.

On Saturday night, she took to Twitter to declare, “Just so you know...I’m ashamed Ted Cruz is from America.” The words were accompanied by photos of Cruz and former president Dwight D. Eisenhower side by side and she compared quotes from Ike and Cruz.

Later, she tweeted, “I stand corrected...Just so you know, I’m ashamed Ted Cruz claims to be American,” referencing the controversy over Cruz having been born in Canada.

Each photo in the original tweet features one of their quotes.

Eisenhower’s says, “I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity.”

Cruz’s says, “We will carpet bomb them into oblivion. I don’t know if sand can glow in the dark, but we’re going to find out.”

Maines and the Dixie Chicks, who got their start in North Texas, suffered a backlash after the 2003 incident. Radio stations across the country dropped them from their playlists. One Kansas station even threw a “chicken toss” party, where ex-fans could dump their CDs, tickets, and other Chicks paraphernalia into garbage cans.

Listeners at Houston’s KILT country station were livid. “We’ve got them off the air for right now,” said Jeff Garrison, program director at KILT, told CNN at the time. “People are shocked. They cannot believe Texas’ own have attacked the state and the president.”

No word of a response from Cruz and, so far, there hasn’t been a major backlash though some are not amused. Readers of the conservative Newsmax site were not holding back.

“The last time that this dingbat made comments like this her record sales dried up, as did her concerts,” wrote patriot in houston. “May it happen once more.”

The Dixie Chicks are about to start their first U.S. tour in a decade with a stop in North Texas at Gexa Energy Pavilion in Dallas on Aug. 5.

Their manager Simon Renshaw told Billboard that “ticket sales have been ridiculous.”
