Here’s who’s winning the Democrat primary runoff for Texas attorney general
State Sen. Nathan Johnson is leading attorney Joe Jaworski in the Democratic Party primary runoff for Texas Attorney General.
Johnson leads Jaworski 61.67% to 38.33%, according to early unofficial results from the Texas Secretary of State’s Office.
The two are facing off to determine who will represent the Democratic candidate in the Nov. 3 general election.
This is also the first election since 2015 without an incumbent running to be Texas’s highest ranking prosecutor.
The incumbent, Ken Paxton, is in his own heated runoff against four-term incumbent John Cornyn for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate.
In a Star-Telegram candidate questionnaire, Jaworski has cast himself as a fighter against the MAGA movement criticizing Johnson for his willingness to work with Republican Senate colleagues.
Johnson has highlighted his ability to win votes in Republican leaning districts pointing to his 2018 victory over former State Senator Don Huffines that flipped a Northern Dallas County seat had been held by Republicans for decades.
Both men have prioritized taking on corruption and making the Attorney General’s Office work better for the average Texan.
Jaworski has called for creating a “Division of Affordability” to address costs affecting young Texans like college debt, homeownership, and affordable rent.
Johnson has called for joining with other state attorneys general to sue the Trump administration when it violates the law, and partnering with local district attorneys promote public safety.
