Republican Andy Hopper wins Texas House seat after defeating incumbent in the primary
Republican Andy Hopper will represent Texas House District 64, which represents most of Denton and parts of Wise County, in the Texas House of Representatives.
Hopper defeated Republican incumbent state Rep. Lynn Stucky in the Republican primaries earlier this year. Stucky voted to impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton last year, but Paxton was ultimately acquitted. After the vote, Paxton targeted Republicans who supported impeachment, including Stucky.
In the lead-up to Nov. 5, Hopper received endorsements from Gov. Greg Abbott, Sen. Ted Cruz, and others, including Kyle Rittenhouse, the right-wing activist who was acquitted of killing two protesters in 2020. He was also endorsed by Julie McCarty, the CEO of the True Texas Project, according to Hopper’s website. The True Texas Project came under fire earlier this year when it organized a pro-Christian nationalist conference in Fort Worth.
The Associated Press declared victory for Hopper at 10:05 p.m., with Hopper receiving 64.6% of the vote. Hopper did not immediately respond to a phone call from the Star-Telegram asking for comment.
His opponent, Democrat Angela Brewer, received 35.4% of the vote as of 10:05 p.m.
Brewer previously ran to represent House District 64 in 2020 against Stucky. She said in a phone call Tuesday night that the district had been gerrymandered by Texas lawmakers in 2021, when they redrew district lines to include all of Wise County, in addition to part of the city of Denton.
“It is an extraordinarily different district after the gerrymandering,” Brewer said.
