One day after Super Tuesday, Michael Bloomberg drops out of presidential race
One day after Super Tuesday, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg — who had a disappointing finish in Texas and other states — ended his bid for the White House.
Bloomberg, who came in third in Texas in the Democratic primary behind former Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, spent millions of dollars on his presidential campaign.
He skipped the first few states to focus on Texas and more than a dozen other states that went to the polls on Tuesday.
As results were being tallied late Tuesday night, he said he would reevaluate his plans.
Wednesday morning, he declared he was out of the race and would endorse Biden.
“I’ve always believed that defeating Donald Trump starts with uniting behind the candidate with the best shot to do it,” Bloomberg said in a statement. “After yesterday’s vote, it is clear that candidate is my friend and a great American, Joe Biden.”
In Texas, Biden narrowly claimed victory with 32% of the vote, over Sanders, who drew nearly 30%. Bloomberg followed with 15%, and U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren drew 11%, unofficial Texas Secretary of State results showed.
