Here’s a look at how some North Texans viewed the debate:

▪ “While I was sorely disappointed with the first 45 minutes of the CNN debate, fortunately the candidates themselves eventually forced real issue discussion into the forum. Too much of the first half was wasted on silly back and forth that looked to me more like a sideshow than a serious forum. I think that CNN is not as interested in helping viewers determine where candidates actually stand on the issues than they are with drumming up controversy between candidates. That does a great injustice to something as serious as a presidential election.” — State Sen. Konni Burton, a Colleyville Republican, Tea Party activist and longtime Ted Cruz supporter

▪ “Thrilled to hear the candidates standing up for life. It’s an impressive display of knowledge & debating skills but no question Carly hit it out of the park. #characterofournation” — Kyleen Wright, a Mansfield Republican and president of the Texans for Life Coalition

▪ “The Republicans in this debate are speaking to billionaires and seem to oppose President Reagan’s approach of keeping lines of communication open with the world, even our enemies. This debate proves that Hillary’s approach of working to protect and expand the middle class will beat every one of these Republicans.” — Jason Smith, a Fort Worth attorney and Democrat

▪ “I know Mike Huckabee is a huckster, but I have to admit I love his passion. ... Jeb Bush is really not doing himself any favors tonight. I doubt he’s selling anyone.” — Ken Emanuelson, a Dallas Tea Party activist

▪ “After 15 minutes of giving center stage to Donald Trump, the debate took an adult turn and began a serious discussion on the Iran deal and engagement with Russia. Unfortunately, while great issues face the American people, the debate is focused on the appropriateness of state dinner. Little wonder we are adrift. It’s early, but I’m surprised that the anti-Trump rhetoric hasn’t been louder. Jeb tried and was immediately slapped down. Maybe the others have determined it’s not worth the risk.” — Adrian Murray, a Fort Worth Republican precinct chairman
