Sen. John Cornyn has introduced legislation to rename U.S. 287 to honor President Donald Trump.

The I-47 Future Interstate Act would rename the highway to Interstate 47 and be known as the “Trump Interstate.” Sen. Cynthia Lummis from Wyoming is a cosponsor of the bill.

U.S. 287 runs through almost 1,800 miles of the country, including through Fort Worth, from Port Arthu to Choteau, Montana. It is the second longest three-digit highway in the United States.

The legislation cites a Texas Department of Transportation study from July 2025 that found upgrading U.S. 287 to an Interstate would save $5.4 billion in travel costs, create over 46,000 jobs and add $11.6 billion to the GDP by 2050.

At the time the legislation was introduced, Trump had not endorsed a candidate for the Senate race between Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. The two are in a May 26 runoff in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate.

The Paxton campaign did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

“Texas is Trump Country, and this bill cements that legacy by designating nearly 1,800 miles of open-road from Texas’ Gulf Coast to the edge of the U.S.-Canadian border as I-47 to forever be remembered as Trump Interstate,” Cornyn said. “By upgrading one of our nation’s longest highways to a future interstate, this legislation will increase economic growth and improve safety, all while honoring the most consequential president of our lifetime.”
