Will North Texas Democrats boycott President Trump’s State of the Union speech?
Last March during President Donald Trump’s speech to a joint session of Congress, some Democrats protested and interrupted his address. For Tuesday night’s State of the Union, some of them are calling for a boycott.
During last year’s address, Rep. Al Green of Houston was removed after he shouted at the president. Green said he would not be attending this evening's State of the Union for an unrelated issue.
Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has told Democrats they have two options: Attend with “silent defiance,” or don’t attend and “send a message to Donald Trump in that fashion.”
Jeffries will be at the State of the Union, but a growing list of Democrats are boycotting it.
Rep. Marc Veasey of Fort Worth plants to attend the address, his office said Tuesday. A spokesperson would not say whether Veasey might protest in some other way.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Dallas is on the campaign trail in her bid for the U.S. Senate. She is scheduled to be in San Marcos during the State of the Union, which starts at 8 p.m. CT.
It’s not clear whether Rep. Julie Johnson, a Farmers Branch Democrat, will be attending the speech.
The Star-Telegram reached out to both Crockett and Johnson’s office, but neither responded immediately.
