Most Republicans have moved on from last weekend’s Bo French controversy, but one Texas senator is still throwing jabs.

Republican Paul Bettencourt of Houston posted on X asking the Tarrant County GOP chair if he lied to his 31,100 followers on Monday when he wrote that his property taxes “have never decreased. Never.

“Is the #txlege going to stop jerking us around and actually get rid of property taxes?” French posted on X. “I doubt it. They are going to keep lying to you about lowering your taxes while massively increasing their spending.”

Enter Bettencourt in the role of the fact checker.

His Tuesday post on X said French’s accusations are “untrue and false in the extreme!

“The facts are plainly obvious,” Bettencourt posted. “1st, your personal tax bill is online and available, as it clearly shows your Fort Worth ISD tax bill decreased from $29,412.72 in 2022 to $26,225.34 in 2023!”

The Houston senator said the Texas Legislature has had the greatest impact on school district property taxes, which is usually the largest part of a homeowner’s tax bill.

Property tax relief was one of Gov. Greg Abbott’s seven emergency items passed during the legislative session. Abbott signed three property tax exemption bills into law in June at an event in Denton. Two of those bills were authored by Bettencourt.

In his X post, Bettencourt highlighted that French’s total property taxes also decreased from 2022 to 2023 by nearly $4,000.

“Thus, sir, #txlege is not lying,” Bettencourt said. “Are you?”
