Tarrant County commissioners voted 4-1 Tuesday to hire Mackenzie Eason & Associates of Fort Worth to conduct a national search for its new county administrator.

Alisa Simmons voted no. Commissioners had a choice between two firms.

Longtime administrator G.K. Maenius will retire Sept. 30 after 35 years of service to the county. He is the only person who has ever held the position, which he assumed in 1988.

The position oversees all departments, the budget and thousands of employees.

Experts who spoke with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram say it may be hard to fill, citing a growing partisan environment in Tarrant County.
