President Joe Biden will be in Fort Worth on Tuesday to discuss veteran support
President Joe Biden will be in Fort Worth on Tuesday to discuss the country’s obligation to veterans.
The White House on Wednesday announced the visit to North Texas, but didn’t provide many details on Biden’s itinerary.
“On Tuesday, March 8, the President will travel to Fort Worth, Texas to discuss upholding our sacred obligation to veterans as part of his Unity Agenda for the Nation,” a news release reads.
Biden announced the four-part unity agenda during his State of the Union address. In the speech, he said he’d work to beat the opioid epidemic, tackle mental health, “end cancer as we know it” and support veterans.
“Veterans are the best of us,” Biden said, according to a transcript of the speech. “I’ve always believed that we have a sacred obligation to equip all those we send to war and care for them and their families when they come home.”
Biden said his administration is working to give veterans job training and housing and assisting lower-income veterans with receiving Veterans Affairs care debt-free. He also called on Congress to “make sure veterans devastated by toxic exposures in Iraq and Afghanistan finally get the benefits and comprehensive health care they deserve,” according to the transcript.
“The VA is pioneering new ways of linking toxic exposures to diseases, already helping more veterans get benefits,” Biden said according to the transcript. “And tonight, I’m announcing we’re expanding eligibility to veterans suffering from nine respiratory cancers.”
In an interview with the Star-Telegram, Rep. Marc Veasey, D-Fort Worth, said he’s talked with the White House but did not have details of Biden’s itinerary.
Veasey said he’s suggested Biden address the Central City Flood Control Project, which is being funded with money from the federal infrastructure law.
“I think it’s a great project to talk about and to tout and while he’s here he ought to take credit for it,” Veasey said.
