Tarrant County Commissioner Devan Allen said Tuesday that she would not seek reelection.

Tarrant County commissioner Devan Allen announced Tuesday that she will not seek reelection in 2022.

Allen has represented Precinct 2 since 2018. The area covers the cities of Arlington, Mansfield, Grand Prairie, Pantego, Kennedale and Dalworthington Gardens. She did not define her next step, but expressed excitement for making “a global impact on issues affecting women.”

“I understood the assignment,” Allen wrote. “I was sent here to show up every day and to give my absolute best. Not to make my name great. Not to be the mouthpiece for an ideology or a puppet to any master. I was sent to serve the people. To show up and speak truths even when bullied, even when disrespected, even while openly and behind closed doors, enduring discrimination in various forms.”

Allen was the first Black person elected to represent Precinct 2, as well as the third woman in history to serve on the commissioners court, she wrote in the statement. Her seat, J.D. Johnson’s seat in Precinct 4, and the county judge seat are open in 2022.

A spokesperson for Allen’s office said in an email that she was not available for comment.
