Bedford City Council approves pay raises for employees

After numerous discussions, the Bedford City Council voted to adopt a $38 million budget, which includes pay increases and cancer screenings.

The unanimous vote to adopt the $38,097,189 budget for the 2020-2021 fiscal year came after several months of discussions on how the city would be affected financially because of COVID-19.

Meg Jakubik, strategic services manager, told council members that the dire projections concerning losses in sales tax revenue because of COVID-19 didn’t play out.

“We were very glad that didn’t happen,” she said.

The budget also includes 2 percent across the board pay increases, she said. There is also funding for cancer screenings for all firefighters.

The council also voted unanimously to keep the current property tax rate of 56.9 cents per $100 of assessed value meaning the average homeowner would pay around $108 per month.
