Fort Worth councilman tests positive for coronavirus. ‘Mask up,’ he says

Fort Worth Councilman Cary Moon tested positive Thursday for coronavirus and is urging people to wear a mask.

Moon began to feel slightly sick Tuesday, but assumed his symptoms were related to allergies. By Wednesday he had a fever and decided to get tested. His symptoms have been mild.

Contract tracing has not revealed the a source, he said. Moon was on a bus with other city officials on Friday for Opal Lee’s Juneteenth march, but said everyone wore a mask and social distanced. Over the weekend he said he was with family.

“We thought we were doing everything right,” he said. “I think this is a reminder to people. Mask up.”

During the city council meeting Tuesday at City Hall, Moon was seen coughing into his arm a few times. During the council’s work session, he didn’t wear a mask while sitting down, but a Plexiglas shield and another seat separated him form Councilman Brian Byrd. Councilman Dennis Shingleton sat across the wide table from Moon, also without a mask.

Moon also didn’t wear a mask during the regular council meeting, where Plexiglas shields are on either side of the council member’s seats.

He said he put on a mask when he walked around City Hall.

Shingleton said he believed the distance between him and Moon was at least 6 feet. He said he wasn’t sure if would get a test, but didn’t plan to come to City Hall “any time soon.” Byrd said he would get tested Friday.

This is at least the third time City Hall has been exposed to coronavirus.

Price has been social distancing for about a week after her trainer, Tim Tarpley tested positive for COVID-19. Tarpley’s parents, Curtis and Betty Tarpley, died of the disease while holding hands June 18.

In April, two city employees with close contact to Mayor Betsy Price and other council members tested positive coronavirus.

Moon was also tested in April.

“I feel like a had much more exposure the first time I got tested then I did this time,” he said, adding that the April scare made him take more precautions.
