Planning to vote in the 2020 primary in Texas? Make sure you’re registered by Feb. 3.

Want to vote in this year’s March 3 primary election?

Then you’ve still got time to make sure you are registered.

The deadline: Feb. 3.

“Being prepared is essential for Texans seeking to make their voices heard,” Texas Secretary of State Ruth Hughs said in a written statement.

Statewide, more than 16.1 million Texans are registered to vote. And in Tarrant County, more than 1.15 million people are registered to vote as well.

Here’s what you need to know about registering to vote:

What you need to know to register

You cannot register to vote online.

But voter registration applications are available online, as well as at the Tarrant County Elections Administration and at subcourthouses, city halls, libraries and post offices. Those applications must be postmarked or dropped off at the election office by the end of business Feb. 3.

To register to vote in Texas, a person must be a U.S. citizen and at least 18 by Election Day, can’t be a convicted felon (unless the sentence has been completed, including parole or probation) and can’t be declared mentally incapacitated by a court.

To find out if you are registered, visit VoteTexas.gov. You also may call the Tarrant County Elections Office with election-related questions at 817-831-8683.

Early voting runs from Feb. 18-28.

2020 elections

Tarrant voters this year will use new voting equipment bought last year. Machines have a touchscreen where voters can review the ballot and make their choices. The machine will print a list of the choices made. After voters review that sheet, they’ll put it in one of the scanners to formally cast their vote.

This election will be the second time local election officials have operated countywide vote centers, which let voters cast ballots at any polling place in Tarrant County on Election Day.
