Tarrant County state Rep. Giovanni Capriglione was named chairman of the powerful budget-writing House Appropriations Committee on Friday.

House Speaker Dennis Bonnen appointed Capriglione, R-Southlake, to the post to replace the retired Rep. John Zerwas, R-Richmond. The Texas Legislature won’t return to Austin until January 2021, but interim work continues in the meantime.

“As a longtime member of the House Appropriations Committee, Rep. Capriglione has been a dedicated steward of our state’s financial resources and his contributions to the budget-writing process have been significant,” Bonnen said in a statement. “His experience as a small business owner — coupled with his expertise on complex budgetary matters — have made him both highly regarded among colleagues and uniquely qualified to lead the committee.”
