At least four people were killed by an avalanche in the French Alps on Sunday, April 9, France officials said.

The avalanche happened “in the middle of the day” at the Armancette Glacier, near Contamines-Montjoie, France’s interior minister Gerald Darmanin said on Twitter.

In addition to the four deaths, multiple people are injured, Darmanin said.

Rescue crews are at the scene searching for survivors, president Emmanuel Macron said on Twitter, adding that his thoughts are with the families of the victims and the rescuers.

Contamines-Montjoie is roughly 380 miles southeast of Paris.
