Dog named Lucy throws out diapers and helps with newborn twins. TikTokers love her
A dog in Canada helps take care of her family’s newborn twins with a variety of useful — and adorable — tricks. Videos of the wholesome pup are making TikTok cry.
Josh and Kelly Rheaume adopted their dog, Lucy, almost seven years ago, the family from Capreol explained on their TikTok account @uhohtwins. Born outside in -36 degrees Fahrenheit weather, Lucy was the only pup in her litter to survive, the video posted on Dec. 4 says. When the couple adopted Lucy, they immediately knew they needed her as much as she needed them.
When the couple came home from the hospital with twin girls in mid-November, the family had a lot of adjustments to make, another video says.
“At first, Lucy was standoffish,” Josh told McClatchy News on Tuesday, Dec. 20. “She kept her distance from the girls in what I’d describe as jealousy. My wife and I joked a bit and referred to her attitude as only-child-syndrome.”
To help Lucy adjust, the parents started asking her to help by bringing an item to them, Josh explained. “We noticed things started getting better. That’s when I decided to include her in so much more.”
Instead of getting beers on command, Lucy gets bottles of milk, one video shows. She also retrieves diapers, wipes, stuffed teddy bears, books and toys when asked. Step stools and towels tied around handles help the dog reach whatever she’s sent to retrieve.
“Lucy does more in 5 mins than my ex husband did in 15 years,” one TikTok user commented.
Videos of Lucy have been watched over 10 million times on TikTok. Many users have commented about how Lucy’s brings them to tears.
“Can you clean up?” Josh asks Lucy in one video, holding out a folded diaper. Obediently, Lucy takes the diaper and throws it away in the trash can.
The dog — a chocolate lab, husky and German shepherd mix — also knows which twin is which, Josh explained in comments.
Other videos show Lucy helping pick up toys and collect laundry. When asked if she can tell one newborn “I love you,” Lucy promptly barks.
“Lucy is just destined to be a big sister,” one video shows. “She’s proud of her girls,” the family posted on Instagram along with a photo of Lucy sitting by the twins.
Josh encouraged other dog owners to “build a strong bond” with their pup and, “when the kids arrive,” include the dog “as much as possible.”
Capreol is in the province of Ontario and about 330 miles northwest of Toronto.
