Powerball players win $1.5 million in CA as $1.8 billion jackpot hit in US
Two Powerball tickets sold in California won $1.5 million each as two other tickets sold in the U.S. hit the $1.787 billion jackpot.
Tickets sold in Missouri and Texas matched five winning numbers and the Powerball to split the second-largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history in the drawing Saturday, Sept. 6, the national Powerball site said.
Each top winner will have the choice of an annuitized prize of $893.5 million or a lump sum payment of $410.3 million, national lottery officials said.
In California, two players matched five winning numbers but not the Powerball to win $1,564,348 each, the California Lottery said.
California adjusts lottery prize amounts based on the number of tickets sold and number of winners.
The lucky tickets were sold at Love’s Travel Shop in Tehachapi, which is about a 40-mile drive southeast from Bakersfield, and a Circle K store in Dublin, which is about a 35-mile drive east from San Francisco.
Tickets sold in Kansas and Texas matched five winning numbers and the Power Play multiplier but not the Powerball, to win $2 million each.
Tickets sold in Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Texas and West Virginia matched five winning numbers but not the Powerball to win $1 million each.
Across the US, 232 players matched four numbers drawn and the Powerball to win $50,000, and 90 more added the Power Play multiplier to win $100,000.
The winning numbers were 11, 23, 44, 61 and 62 with a Powerball of 17. The Power Play multiplier was 2x.
Powerball jackpot resets
The jackpot resets to an estimated $20 million, with a cash value of about $9.2 million, for the next drawing Monday, Sept. 8, the national Powerball site said.
More than 9.9 million other Powerball tickets sold in the United States also won prizes ranging from $4 to $100,000, the lottery said.
The Powerball jackpot was previously won May 31, when a California player hit the $204.5 million grand prize.
What to know about Powerball
To score a jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.
The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338.
Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state.
Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.
Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
