Wrong turn in construction zone leads Ohio couple to win $1 million on Powerball
An Ohio couple won $1 million on a Powerball ticket after taking a wrong turn in a construction zone.
The Mahoning County couple was traveling from city to city in Ohio buying Powerball tickets when they came across some construction in Canfield.
“She made a wrong turn and there was construction, so we had to go through the Sheetz parking lot,” the man told lottery officials.
He said they had never been to that location, but decided to stop and buy $10 worth of Powerball tickets just hours before the Sept. 3 drawing.
The next morning, the woman scanned the tickets while her husband slept. Then she realized the ticket they bought at the Sheetz in Canfield was a winner.
“I scanned the ticket when I got up for work and saw $1 million, and I started screaming,” she said. “I showed him on my phone and said, ‘I think that’s a million right?’ and he said, ‘I think it is!’”
The couple used the auto-pick option to match five of the winning numbers, according to the lottery.
Now, they are considering using their prize to buy a new home.
“We might move. We’ve been talking about it for years, and it was still a few years away, but this expedited that plan,” he said.
The couple said they plan to keep playing and will play again for the Sept. 6 Powerball drawing, which has a jackpot of $1.7 billion.
