Nearly 17 years after a man was fatally shot riding his bike after work in an attempted robbery, California officials are making a new push for information.

A $200,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of suspects in Jordan McKay’s 2008 slaying was approved by the city and county of San Francisco, the San Francisco Police Department said in an Aug. 20 post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

On Sept. 17, 2008, McKay was riding his bicycle after work near Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, police said.

The 23-year-old computer animator was “a devoted cyclist and traveler,” the San Francisco Chronicle reported in 2008.

“He loved his bike and he loved to fly all over the place on it and not be trapped in traffic,” his sister, Dana Landis, told the newspaper.

As he rode his bike, a sedan carrying three to four people stopped, police said.

The group left the “light-colored 2008 Chevrolet Impala/Malibu” and tried to rob McKay, police said.

McKay fought back as he was attacked and was shot in the struggle, police said.

Three people got back into the sedan and fled as McKay died from a gunshot wound, according to police.

Despite more than a decade passing, McKay’s father told KTVU in 2022 his son’s death was not forgotten.

“It’s incredible how much of a (hole) he’s left in our lives,” Matt McKay told the TV station.

Police said the car driven by the group matched the description of car “used in an attempted robbery in the East Bay an hour before McKay’s” fatal shooting, adding that detectives later determined the car had been stolen.

The day after McKay’s killing, the abandoned car was found charred about 8 miles from the fatal shooting, police said.

The man accused of shooting McKay is described as having been between 19 and 24 years old with “braided hair to his cheekbone,” police said, adding that he was “wearing all black baggy clothing, black baseball cap worn backwards, dark hooded sweatshirt pulled over his head, dark denim jeans.”

The two others in the vehicle are described as being smaller in size than the first man, and each wore “a baggy black hooded sweatshirt and baggy jeans,” according to police.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Homicide Detail Inspectors Daniel Cunningham at 415-553-9515 or Tom Newland at 415-553-1144.
