A driver upset that he got caught on a speed camera then stole two photo radar warning signs, Arizona police said.

The 55-year-old man was on his way to work at about 7:30 a.m. Aug. 5 when a speed camera flashed as he was driving, the Tempe Police Department said in a news release.

He was then seen about 30 minutes later on video surveillance “walking up to a photo radar warning sign, kicking sandbags off the base and carrying it away,” police said.

Police shared the video on Facebook.

The driver also stole a second sign, police said, and threw them both away.

Police arrested him more than a week later, on Aug. 13, on multiple charges:

  • Obstructing government operations
  • Interference with official traffic control device
  • Theft

“He took what would be a civil traffic infraction and a small fine or traffic school, and ended up with three criminal charges and being booked into jail. So there’s consequences for your actions,” Tempe police Sgt. Kurt Buczkowski said in the video.

Photo enforcement cameras were set up at 14 intersections in Tempe on May 7, according to the city of Tempe.

“The intention is to change people’s driving behaviors — slow down. Don’t run red lights,” the city said.

These cameras can reduce crashes by 50%, the city said, attributing studies from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Anyone who is caught speeding or running a red light past these cameras will be fined $250. Two citations will be given if a red light is run while speeding.
