Son armed with bat and knife kills his parents, ages 75 and 73, Texas cops say
A 47-year-old man is accused of killing his parents who were found lying in the living room of their home following a brutal attack, Texas authorities say.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a home for a welfare check July 11 when one of the victims’ sons could not reach his parents.
Deputies found both parents lying on their living room floor, according to a criminal complaint. The 75-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and his 73-year-old wife was taken to a hospital, where she died.
Their baseball bat-inflicted blunt-force injuries were so severe, according to investigators, it was initially believed they had been shot.
A bloody knife was found next to the male victim, according to deputies, who said he was also stabbed in the chest.
The son who called for the welfare check said he had previously warned his parents about his brother, Christopher Leman Jr., authorities said. He described Leman as “explosive” and told his parents he could hurt them.
Deputies said that on July 11, the same day his parents were found dead, Leman went to an Academy Sporting Goods store to purchase ammo for a gun.
“(Leman) made a vague threat regarding how he intended to use it, which alarmed the Academy employee and triggered a call for service,” deputies said.
When investigators towed Leman’s U-Haul truck he was driving, they found a metal baseball bat, according to the complaint.
More than a month after the parents’ deaths, deputies issued a warrant for Leman’s arrest on murder charges.
He was taken into custody Aug. 17, according to jail records.
A motive for the killing is unclear. Leman said the bat used in the attack and the knife found near his father were his, according to court documents.
The victims were identified as Christopher Leman Sr. and Mary Leman, who were married for 57 years, an obituary says.
