Moments after a woman was escorted home by police, a man killed her, and then he was fatally shot by an officer, Texas police say.

The deadly shooting happened Monday, July 28, at an apartment complex in Brownsville, the police department said in a video posted on Facebook.

Earlier in the day, police responded to a report from a woman who told officers that a man she was previously in a relationship with attacked her at a pawn shop, KVEO reported.

She said the man chased her with a hammer, police told KRGV.

Following the attack, police escorted her home, the outlet reported.

But the man was already there waiting and he shot her, police said, according to KVEO.

Officers went to check on the woman minutes after dropping her off, police told KRGV, and they encountered the man. He fired a shot at police and an officer fired back, hitting him, the department said.

Police identified the woman as 23-year-old Nora Zuniga and the man as Bernardo Pedraza, 35. Both were in critical condition, but later died from their injuries, police said.

Brownsville is a roughly 280-mile drive south from San Antonio.
