Caregiver tries to flush stolen jewelry down toilet as police arrive, IL cops say

Officers were on their way to an assisted living facility as a caregiver accused of stealing from a 90-year-old resident locked herself in the bathroom, Illinois police said.

Maryln Villalobos, 54, had the stolen jewelry with her in the bathroom and tried to flush the items down the toilet as police showed up, according to a July 8 news release from Shorewood Police.

The caregiver was arrested and some of the items were pulled from the toilet, according to police.

Villalobos was taken to the police station, where she repeatedly requested to use the bathroom. She went into the restroom and tried to flush cash down the toilet at the station, according to police

Police determined the cash she was attempting to flush belonged to the assisted living resident.

Villalobos was charged with financial exploitation of the elderly, residential burglary, burglary, theft and obstructing a peace officer.

Shorewood is about a 45-mile drive southwest from Chicago.
