DNA ties robbery suspect to multiple ambush-style sexual assaults, FL cops say
A robbery suspect has been linked by DNA to multiple ambush-style sexual assaults in Florida, some dating back 25 years, according to investigators.
Jason Blount, 52, has been charged with three counts of sexual battery, and detectives identified a fourth victim “who was elderly at the time and is now deceased,” the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said in a July 7 news release.
“Our detectives believe there are more victims in Jacksonville, Orlando and potentially beyond,” the sheriff’s office said.
Blount lives in Orlando and came to the attention of Orange County law enforcement in a robbery case, officials said. Details of the robbery were not released.
“Upon booking, deputies took his DNA. When they entered that into the system, it matched the cases from Jacksonville,” the sheriff’s office said.
“These happened in 2000 and 2002. ... His M.O.? Ambushing women outside their homes. One was jogging when he attacked her. Another was leaving her apartment when he dragged her to another location. In a third case, he forced his way into the victim’s apartment.”
A special assault unit cold case detective was familiar with the assaults, and she developed probable cause to charge Blount, officials said.
“Our hearts go out to the women ... brutally victimized,” the sheriff’s office said. “We will work with the State Attorney’s Office to bring ... the harshest punishment possible.”
