A FedEx worker stole nearly $40,000 worth of valuables from packages, including gold bars and a diamond ring, both of which he pawned, Tennessee authorities said.

Antwone Tate, 34, is now facing a handful of theft charges after several individuals and businesses complained about “pilfered” items, according to Shelby County records.

FedEx told McClatchy News that Tate, who used to work at the Memphis hub, is no longer with the company.

“The security of our customers’ shipments is a top priority,” FedEx said in a June 18 statement. “FedEx does not tolerate criminal activity in our network, and we work with law enforcement to shut down any such conduct.”

In late May, FedEx started getting reports about certain items not arriving to customers, according to the Memphis International Airport Police Department. The Memphis FedEx hub is located at the airport.

One man complained that two of his collectible baseball cards worth over $6,800 were missing from his package, police wrote in an arrest affidavit.

Investigators said they found an eBay account named antta_57, later learned to be Tate, had listed them for sale.

A precious metals company also reported that four of its gold bars worth $13,592 had been stolen, then another company said a woman’s diamond ring with rubies didn’t make it to the customer, police said.

Investigators reported finding a receipt matching those items sold to a pawn shop, where Tate provided his Tennessee driver’s license to conduct the transaction, according to the report.

A few days after those theft reports came in, officers got a call from FedEx that Tate was seen on camera on May 20 cutting open boxes and placing items in his pockets, police said. One of those items was a $9,000 vintage French serpent bracelet in 18-karat gold and enamel, according to the report.

When confronted, Tate didn’t want to make a statement and said he didn’t have the bracelet, officers said.

In total, investigators said Tate stole just under $40,000 worth of valuables from packages, and he was arrested June 16.
