A missing woman was held captive for three weeks, suffering “near daily abuse” by a man accused in her disappearance, Mississippi deputies said.

Quincy Terrell Gilbert, 44, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and capital kidnapping after deputies discovered the woman inside his Rankin County home, the sheriff’s office said June 9 on Facebook.

Rankin County deputies worked with the Smith County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the case, both agencies said in a news release.

On May 12, deputies got a call from a “concerned mother” who hadn’t been able to reach her adult daughter for several weeks, according to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office. Fearing for her daughter’s safety, she called authorities to report her missing, deputies said.

Information led authorities to a home in Rankin County, where deputies found the missing woman, according to both agencies. She had “physical injuries” and was taken to a hospital for treatment, deputies said.

“An interview conducted with the female victim revealed that she had been held against her will at the residence for three weeks while enduring near daily abuse,” according to the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office.

A hospital exam showed the woman had “multiple broken bones in her face,” as well as lacerations on the rest of her body, deputies said.

The suspect, later identified as Gilbert, was found at a home in Pelahatchie, where he was arrested, Rankin County deputies said.

During a search of the home where deputies found the missing woman, investigators recovered a broomstick that had been altered “in order to abuse the victim,” according to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities didn’t give an update on the woman’s condition. Her relationship to Gilbert was also unclear.

Gilbert remained in custody at the Rankin County Adult Detention Center on a $600,000 bond as of Tuesday, June 10, online records show.

Rankin County is about a 20-mile drive east from downtown Jackson.
