A man was fatally stabbed in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida, while attacking the owner of a sushi restaurant, according to police.

Dustin Hedenberg, 41, was “behaving erratically” on the afternoon of Friday, May 23, the St. Petersburg Police Department said in a news release. He punched someone at a Scientology Center, then made his way to Ahi Sushi a short time later, police said.

At the restaurant, police said Hedenberg got into “a heated confrontation” with the 51-year-old owner, then knocked him to the ground and repeatedly punched him. As Hedenberg rained blows down on him, the owner “grabbed a screwdriver and stabbed Hedenberg,” police said.

Hedenberg was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, according to police, who added that no charges have been brought against the owner so far, though that could change.

Ahi Sushi did not immediately respond to McClatchy News’ request for comment on May 25.

“Detectives will confer with the State Attorney’s Office as they continue to investigate to determine if charges are warranted,” police said.

St. Petersburg is about a 20-mile drive southwest from downtown Tampa.
