Some Apple users are owed money as part of a class-action settlement over alleged privacy violations involving Siri.

The tech giant agreed to pay $95 million to resolve accusations that Siri, its voice-enabled AI assistant, recorded private conversations and shared them with third parties, court documents show.

Users alleged Apple collected their confidential communications as the “result of an unintended Siri activation” on their devices, according to the settlement administrator’s website.

Apple has denied wrongdoing and describes its Siri technology as “the most private digital assistant.”

“On-device intelligence makes your experience with Siri personal — learning your preferences and what you might want — while maintaining your privacy,” the company’s website says. “And, of course, what you share with Siri is never shared with advertisers.”

McClatchy News reached out to the tech giant for comment May 8 and was awaiting a response.

Under the terms of the settlement, some Apple users can receive up to $20 per Siri device, settlement administrators said.

Here’s what to know:

Who’s eligible?

According to the administrators, those eligible to file a claim must:

  • Be a current or former owner or purchaser of a Siri-enabled Apple device
  • Live in the U.S. or a U.S. territory
  • Have had their private communications allegedly obtained by Apple and/or shared with a third party due to unintended Siri activation from Sept. 17, 2014 to Dec. 31, 2024.

How do I file a claim?

Claim forms can be completed and submitted online, administrators said.

Some Apple users received an email or postcard notification about the settlement along with a Claim Identification Code, which should be used when filing a claim, according to the website. Customers who weren’t notified by mail or email may still file a claim

All claims must be submitted by Wednesday, July 2.

How much will I get paid?

Apple users who submit a valid claim can get up to $20 per eligible device, though final payments may be higher or lower depending on the number of claims submitted, administrators said.

Users can submit claims for a maximum of five Siri devices.

When will I get paid?

Payments will be processed once a court approves the settlement, barring any appeals, according to the administrator’s website. A hearing to finalize the terms in scheduled for Aug. 1.

“If there is no appeal, your settlement benefit will be processed promptly,” administrators said. “Please be patient.”
