Man shot and killed ex while she waited to pick up their daughter, NV officials say
A man accused of waging “a campaign of abuse” against his ex and eventually killing her is prison-bound, Nevada officials said.
Esteban Garcia was sentenced to life without parole in the deadly 2023 shooting of Jennifer Beltran-Galassi, the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office said in an April 25 news release.
McClatchy News reached out to Garcia’s attorney April 29 and was awaiting a response.
Garcia is accused of shooting and killing Beltran-Galassi in August 2023 near a park in Sun Valley, prosecutors said.
Beltran-Galassi was waiting “for their daughter to arrive for a custodial exchange,” according to prosecutors, who said the child saw her mother die.
Garcia started his abusive campaign in 2022 after he and Beltran-Galassi broke up, prosecutors said. The campaign included death threats and stalking, according to prosecutors, who said Garcia was sentenced in connection with domestic battery a week before the shooting.
That sentence was for probation, and Garcia was ordered not to have contact with the 20-year-old Beltran-Galassi, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release after the shooting.
Beltran-Galassi was described on a GoFundMe page as “a charismatic woman that loved life” and was devoted to her 3-year-old daughter. She “will forever be loved and missed,” according to the page.
In the news release, District Attorney Chris Hicks said “our hearts and prayers are with Ms. Beltran-Galassi’s family as they continue to grieve an unimaginable loss.” Hicks added that Garcia’s life sentence on first-degree murder in her killing is “firm, necessary, and fully deserved.”
Sun Valley is about a 7-mile drive northeast from Reno.
