Five members of the same family were wounded after police said a fight between two brothers escalated into a shooting at a Michigan home, news outlets report.

The shooting happened at about 4 p.m. Saturday, April 12, on Detroit’s northwest side, WXYZ reported.

Officers responded to a shots fired call and took three people into custody, the outlet reported. Two others were hospitalized in critical condition as of Saturday, according to police.

Investigators say the family was gathered at the home after the death of a relative who had been diagnosed with “a long term illness,” and two brothers got into a physical fight with one another, WJBK reported.

A gun fell out of one of the brother’s pants during the struggle, and the other picked it up and fired, Deputy Chief Charles Fitzgerald said at the scene. Then, other relatives pulled out guns and opened fire to protect the brother being shot at, he said, the station reported.

Fitzgerald said the family was still fighting when police arrived, and officers saw one family member hitting another with a broom.

The brothers have not been publicly identified, but police said they are 53 and 57 years old, WWJ reported.

Of the five people injured, two were men and three were women, and they all have the same last name, police said, according to the outlet.

An investigation is underway.
