A 16-year-old boy is accused of shooting his stepfather, then calling emergency responders to report it, Virginia deputies said.

Deputies and medical officials responded to the call in the afternoon on April 6 and found the boy in the woods near his home in the Shawneeland area, the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office said in an April 7 news release.

The teenager, who was not identified by the sheriff’s office, was arrested and charged with attempted murder, malicious wounding and firing a weapon in an occupied dwelling, according to the release.

Deputies said they found the boy’s stepfather inside the house, and he was taken to a hospital for his injuries.

Family members took the gun away from the boy after the shooting, deputies said.

It’s unclear why the boy shot his stepfather, but deputies said there wasn’t an argument or fight leading up to it.

“This was an isolated incident with no threat to the general public,” according to deputies.

Shawneeland is about a 90-mile drive northwest from Washington, D.C.
