Five dogs escaped and brutally attacked a 43-year-old man in Arizona, leading to his death days later, deputies said.

The incident happened at about 6:10 a.m. March 30 in Tucson, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

The man was found lying in a roadway with “severe injuries across his body,” deputies said.

Deputies said they rushed to give him medical attention until medics got to the scene.

He was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where he died April 2 from the injuries, deputies said.

Martin Martinez, 60, was taking care of the dogs on his property, deputies said.

He was initially arrested on suspicion of felony endangerment and felony assault by a vicious animal. A manslaughter charge was added when the man died, deputies said.

Authorities learned the animals had previously attacked a neighbor and “had a history of being aggressive,” deputies said.

The five dogs were removed from the area and taken to a shelter.

The investigation is ongoing.
