‘Crazy’ acting 2-year-old girl is revealed to be ‘tweaking’ on meth, Florida cops say

A 2-year-old girl seen “acting crazy” at a Louisiana home was actually “tweaking” out on methamphetamines, according to Florida investigators.

The child survived, despite not receiving medical care for 12 hours, the Levy County Sheriff’s Office said in a March 26 news release.

It happened Friday, March 21, at a home in Bronson, and the situation came to light when the girl’s mother took her to a hospital in Marion County, the sheriff’s office said. Bronson is about a 95-mile drive southwest from Jacksonville.

“The mother explained to medical staff that her child was ‘acting crazy’ swinging her arms erratically, bouncing off the walls and had not slept all night,” the sheriff’s office said.

“An immediate medical examination determined the child was exhibiting symptoms commonly seen in adults who are ‘tweaking.’ Lab reports confirmed the child was suffering from an acute intoxication due to an exposure to methamphetamines or other stimulant. ... The child also tested positive for exposure to opiates.”

Medical staff contacted law enforcement and detectives learned the child’s 29-year-old mother and “her paramour” had recently moved into a Bronson home “known for prior narcotic activity,” officials said.

“The mother admitted to detectives that she recently used methamphetamines,” the sheriff’s office said.

“The investigation determined the mother began seeing symptoms in her child some 12 hours prior to taking the child to the hospital. She did not call 911 but instead contacted a friend for a ride to a hospital well away from where she was living. She knowingly put her child at risk and failed to protect the child from dangerous drugs while using dangerous drugs herself.”

An arrest warrant was issued March 24 and the mother was found and arrested the next day in Gilchrist County, officials said. She has been charged with child neglect with great bodily harm, jail records show.
