Powerball player wins $100,000 prize in North Carolina. Where was lucky ticket sold?
A Powerball player just missed a $336 million jackpot — but still has a lot to celebrate in North Carolina.
The player bought a ticket that matched all but one number picked in the March 10 drawing. Since the person spent an extra dollar on the Power Play option, their $50,000 prize doubled to $100,000, results show.
The winning numbers: white balls 17-40-47-50-55, with red Powerball 6.
The winner spent $3 to play the Powerball game in Gastonia, a roughly 20-mile drive west from uptown Charlotte. The lucky ticket was sold at the Harris Teeter grocery store on Robinwood Road, the N.C. Education Lottery wrote on its website and in an email to McClatchy News.
The player won big after their ticket matched four white balls and the red ball. But the player was one number from scoring the jackpot prize, which stood at an estimated $336 million.
No one hit the jackpot, and the North Carolina prize was the biggest won in the country the night of the drawing, according to the Powerball website.
Lottery officials shared news of the win early March 11, before the lucky ticket holder would have been able to come forward. In North Carolina, Powerball winners have about six months to cash in on their prizes, rules show.
What to know about Powerball

Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
