A Virginia lottery player who scored big on a scratch off game said her winnings would “come in handy” as she looked ahead to her retirement, lottery officials said.

Denise Freeman won a $500,000 top prize from a $10 Money Multiplier ticket, marking the final top prize claimed in the game, the Virginia Lottery said in a March 5 news release.

“I was shocked,” Freeman told the lottery while claiming her prize.

She bought her ticket at a grocery store in Alexandria, the lottery said.

The Money Multiplier game, which has now closed since all top prizes have been claimed, started in December 2024, according to the lottery.

Prizes ranged from $10 to $500,000, and the odds of winning a top prize were 1 in 775,200, lottery officials said.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
