ER doctor is stabbed in the chest by patient inside hospital, Illinois officials say

Two emergency room workers were injured during a stabbing incident inside an Illinois hospital, officials say.

The stabbing happened Monday, Feb. 17, at Provident Hospital in Chicago, leading to the arrest of the unnamed suspect, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Police said the male suspect approached a 56-year-old man and stabbed him in the chest.

The victim was an emergency room doctor, WFLD reported. He was taken to a different hospital, where he was listed in fair condition.

A second worker, who WLS reported is a physician assistant, was also injured during the attack.

A hospital spokesperson said a patient is accused of committing the act, according to WMAQ.

“Violence against healthcare workers is on the rise, and it is unacceptable. No one should have to fear for their safety while doing their job,” a Provident Hospital spokesperson told WMAQ. “This issue transcends physical harm — it impacts the emotional and psychological well-being of our entire team, and ultimately affects the quality of care we are able to provide.”

The patient was “immediately taken into custody,” WGN reported. Charges have not been announced.

A motive for the attack is unclear, and police said the incident remains under investigation.
