A fight between basketball teams carried from a gym to the parking lot, leading to an attempted stabbing and the arrest of a 15-year-old player, Maryland authorities say.

Deputies with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office say they responded to Silver Oak Academy on Jan. 31 for a “large fight with multiple injuries,” according to a news release.

The responding deputies learned Silver Oak’s basketball team was playing a team from outside Carroll County, and an altercation ensued in the gym.

That fight, according to the sheriff’s office, continued outside, as one of the visiting players tried to stab a Silver Oak student with a pen.

Authorities said the opposing team began to leave in school vans, but deputies stopped their caravan.

“While conducting their investigation, the individual believed to have tried to use a pen as a weapon, attempted to escape from the scene,” the sheriff’s office said. “After a brief foot chase the student was taken into custody. While doing so, the 15 year old male student assaulted a Carroll County Deputy.”

The 15-year-old was among three students who were taken to a hospital, according to the sheriff. The other two were released after being treated for minor injuries.

The sheriff said the 15-year-old now faces charges in juvenile court. The investigation remains ongoing.

Silver Oak Academy is in Keymar, about a 50-mile drive northwest from Baltimore.
