An intruder was shot dead by a homeowner after busting into the home, New Mexico officials said.

On Jan. 25, Rio Rancho officers responded to a home on reports of a gun fired during a home invasion around 11:55 p.m., police said in a Facebook post.

Two adults and three kids were sleeping inside when the unknown suspect approached the front door and kicked it before entering, officers said.

During the home invasion, the homeowner armed himself with a gun and shot the intruder, striking him in the torso, officials said.

The suspect was transported to the hospital, where he eventually died, officers said.

The homeowner was released and the case will be sent to the district attorney to be reviewed, the release said.

Rio Rancho is about a 10-mile drive north of Albuquerque.
