Nintendo Switch 2 is coming. When will console launch — and how can you try it out?
Nintendo fans in select cities worldwide will get the chance to test out the newly announced Nintendo Switch 2.
As is the company’s habit, without much warning or fanfare Nintendo released a teaser for its upcoming console, the Switch 2, early Thursday.
According to the trailer, the console is slated for release later this year.
The Experience
Gamers with a Nintendo account can enter a drawing to win tickets to one of several Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events, where they’ll get hands-on experience with the new system. Tickets are free and admission is by random selection only, according to Nintendo’s website.
Registration for the drawing opens at noon PT Jan. 17 and closes at 11:59 PM Jan. 26. U.S. events are slated for April 4 through April 6 in New York, April 11 through April 13 in Los Angeles and April 25 through April 27 in Dallas.
Registrants must be at least 18 years old. Nintendo family account holders can register up to six participants.
A Nintendo Direct presentation with more information about the new console is scheduled for April 2, according to the announcement.
From “Click” to “Clack”
The brief trailer released Thursday showcases the device’s beefier size and larger joy-cons, replacing the trademark “click” featured so heavily in the original console’s promotion with a deeper sound. The Switch 2 also features a headphone jack and a more flexible kickstand than the original Switch.
Only footage of one game, a new Mario Kart title, was shown. The trailer calls the Switch 2 backward-compatible, but notes that “certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible,” leaving Nintendo faithful to speculate on which titles can’t make the jump.
Commenters on Nintendo of America’s Youtube channel expressed hope the new device will address issues the original Switch is known for, particularly the infamous joy-con drift that causes the controllers to list off to the side without any input.
