Teens run over pregnant mom, steal car with her 2-year-old inside, Illinois cops say
Two people have been charged after officials say a pregnant woman was violently carjacked and her 2-year-old son was taken.
On Feb. 23, 2023, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office in Illinois responded to a report of a stolen car with a child inside, according to a news release from officials.
A 34-year-old woman had just pulled into her driveway and took one of her children inside, officials said. She returned to her Volkswagen to get her 2-year-old son, when a white BMW pulled up behind her.
A man got out of the BMW and tried to get into her car, while the woman tried to protect her son, the sheriff’s office said.
The woman was five months pregnant at the time, according to WFLD.
The man “battered” the woman and knocked her to the ground, officials said. Then, authorities said he stole her car with her son still inside. He and the driver of the BMW took off, with one of them running the woman over, according to the release.
The woman called 911 and a search for the vehicle and child was conducted. Shortly after, the man driving the Volkswagen was seen abandoning the child in a parking lot of a business, officials said.
Deputies then found the Volkswagen left in another parking lot.
“Thankfully, this ended in the child being unharmed,” Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said at the time, according to the Lake and McHenry County Scanner.
Now, nearly two years later, two people have been charged in connection with the incident.
Officials say two men, who were 17 years old at the time, are charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking and vehicular hijacking.
Both men are in custody on unrelated charges and authorities are working to have the charges transferred to adult court.
