A dog with flair and spirit in Indiana is hoping for a loving home in the New Year — since she’s been ignored by potential adopters for almost two years.

“For far too long, Piper has been waiting. Waiting for someone to see her. Waiting for someone to love her,” the Humane Society for Hamilton County in Fishers said in a Jan. 2 Facebook post. “This four year old sweetheart has so much love to give, but she’s been overlooked time and time again.”

Piper wasn’t always so lonely. While she’s a tad on the shy side, her pet profile reveals that she doesn’t enjoy being surprised, but she’s an affectionate and loving dog once she gets to know a person.

However, as more seasons passed, the spark in her started to dim.

“Piper came to us full of hope, but as the months have passed, she’s started to wonder if she’ll ever find her person,” the shelter wrote. “She’s not asking for much—just a quiet home, a patient heart, and someone to call her own.”

Piper has been watching families walk by her kennel for 556 days, the shelter told McClatchy News. She would love a home with no young children (she likes her personal space) and would need to be the only pet in the household.

“Piper may take a moment to trust, but once she does, her love is like no other. She’ll greet you with her tail wagging, lean into you for comfort, and play with her toys as though her world is finally complete. Piper just needs someone to believe in her,” the shelter said.

The sweet dog’s adoption fee has been waived thanks to the shelter’s “Home for the Holidays” campaign.

“Piper has been waiting in the shadows while others are chosen. She’s watched other dogs leave with their new families, wagging their tails, while she stays behind,” the shelter expressed. “The shelter isn’t where she belongs—she’s longing for a home where she can finally feel at peace.”

Fishers is about a 20-mile drive northeast from Indianapolis.
